Tonight, May 19th you can see it. If you look at the tiny crescent moon, Venus is the bright star right to the left. We just noticed it by accident in a parking lot, knew it had to be some planet so I looked it up. I am not really an astronomy guy but it is kind of cool.
Yeah just noticed that a minute ago too, was going to start a thread to ask what planet it was! Cool sight.
Just tried to go and look at it but the moon is blocked by all the trees. Hopefully it will be visible tomorrow.
When Venus is this close to the moon... thats suppose to mean something right...i mean to the people who believe in that ****.
My upstairs neighbor was outside taking picture of the moon and the star earlier tonight. I thought he was crazy.. I told him it's just a crescent moon and 2 silly dots above it. Then he went all weird and photography terms this and that on me. So I left. I don't know why people are so big into this. I guess it's just me because the way I look at it, it's just a small bright dot.. not like you can see the texture of the planet or something. I don't know why they don't marvel over the sun, it's more visible AND you can see it everyday (with the exception of the poles during winter times)
In a way I agree. A few years ago their was a big hoopla about some planet being really close to us. I think it was Mars. And that this phenomenon would not happen again for a few thousand years. Anyways, my wife and I go to this open field where a bunch of wannabe astronomers have gathered with their telescopes. Its almost like a party scene. Long lines to get to one of the telescopes. I was sure it would be something cool. Eh... I looked through the telescope when my time came and it was just a big ass white dot. Smaller then the moon with naked eyes. Though, you could make out a dark spot that some said were mountains or some crap. It was a waste of two hours. Let me know when something is close enough to where you can see some freakin aliens or at the least some landscape.
My girlfriend called me last night at about 9PM saying "what's that in the sky next to the moon"? I got on the HouChron website, brought up their astrology chart, selected "planets only" and there was Venus right next to the moon. Cool stuff. She and I then celebrated the wonders of astology in a sexual manner all night long.
Stayed with friends out at Lake Travis last night, out towards Lago Vista. It was spectacular. Crescent Moon and a brilliant "star." I knew it was a planet, but not which one. Thanks! Listened to a nightjar for half the night. "Whip-poor-will... whip-poor-will" It was a cool and groovy evening. The lake is full, finally. Sometimes, I really, really enjoy living in Austin.
