We have an older home with window units, here in Houston. Last night (2/27) was the first night we felt the need to turn the A/C's on.

I remember back in my bachelor days, I could go through about March without turning on the A/C... now with a wife-type person and a nicer PC, it has to stay cool in the house.

Is it just me or is it getting warmer earlier? Global Warming? Anyone care to comment?

It's actually going to be 50 by this afternoon. So, the cold isn't gone quite yet.

Last year was a totally mild winter though. This year seems to drag on and on. Another cold front, more depressing rain.
Last summer my thermostat got up to 112 in my backyard!!! Yesterday felt like old times! [IMG]

I'm sorry, is 50 supposed to be cold? Try highs in the 20's like it is up here in the land of beer and cheese. As to global warming...yeah, it's coming and it scares the hell out of me. I don't think the government is telling us everything about the rate of the warming. Just a paranoid feeling...

Considering that it is 21 degrees and there's snow on the ground where I am right now, I'm not buying the "warmer than it used to be" bit. Actually, this year and last year seemed colder than in years past (with more precipitation), at least in Amarillo (which is where I am right now and where I spend a decent amount of time).

It was cooler this winter due to the effects of La Nina, or should I say lack of effects. Because it moved away, finally, we got back closer to normal Houston temperatures.

Personally, I don't want the 20 degree weather. You can keep it in the land of "beer and cheese!"

As for global warming, I don't think there is any doubt that emissions have created serious ecological problems for us on Earth, but we are also in the closest orbit to the sun in 1000 years.

The orbit around the sun shrinks for 1000 years and expands for 1000 years. Our orbit is just now beginning to expand again. At its furthest point, we will likely experience much colder temperatures if we are still around (humans, I mean).

This isn't to discount global warming theories. I believe they have validity as well. However, it is impossible for us to judge the cycle of warmth and cold based solely on our own experience. In the entire history of our planet, humans represents only a fraction of that. Our lifetimes make up just a blink in the natural course of history. It is therefore impossible to judge weather patterns based on our own lives.

That is why we must rely on scinetific research for answers.

It's really hard to tell a trend here in Houston. We have such wierd weather during the fall and spring. The warm, humid gulf has such an impact on our weather.

Last year, I remember a day it got into the 90's one day in February. A few days later, it was in the 40's.

The past few days did seem oddly warm, but it's probably more our wierd weather patterns than any global warming trend.

    Amen, Surf.

Jeff, I can do without it as well. That's one of the reasons I'm moving from this godforsaken state.

Does everyone realize that mean world temperatures were much higher in the past.
50 million years ago the mean annual temperature was over 25C, whereas today it is only around 10 or so.

Dont want to start a debate about global warming, just some interesting things to think about.

Yes, global warming is having an impact. It is not so noticable here as it is at the poles. Ice is melting due to the warming. Icebergs are breaking away. Polar bears are starving and dying because they are unable to traverse the landscape which was once solid ice but is now breaking up making it very difficult for the polar bear to hunt for food and find prey. Greenpeace was saying that the temperature has increased 5 degrees just in the last decade at the north pole causing all this melting due to global warming. During that same span, they said that the temperature has only risen 1 degree here. Global warming has more of an impact near the poles. Unfortunately, society is driven by oil and noone is making much of an effort to find more nature-friendly means any time soon(from lack of funding and effort).

All of the emissions, greenhouse gases, and so forth are going to ruin this planet. I would hate to be alive in a few hundred years to see how bad it gets. Just in 10 years, there have been big changes already.

The sad thing is not enough is being done about it. Because the world is driven by oil, profits and greed, noone wants to make the kind of investment it takes to look to the future and save our planet from eminent destruction. The good ole USA is one of the main culprits, too. Forgive us, Lord, for we know not what we do.
