You can actually pay a one-time fee of 500.00 for a lifetime subscription to Sirius. It would pay for itself in 4 years I figure.
The deal that was mentioned earlier has now expired. This one I saw advertised on tv and was looking into it. If you detach it from the included car kit are you able to listen to it anywhere like a portable radio?
No. The small receiver has to be connected to something like a car stereo or a boom box with an adaptor. We have the portable boom box version and I'm going to get the car adaptor. But, it doesn't play on its own.
I have a question about the car adaptors... they seem to need an antenna on the roof of your car... I would have to have a cord running from the unit like on my dash to the top of the car somehow??? Woudln't that look quite tacky?
the XM antenna is pretty tiny, i have mine running from my trunk, under my seats and into the front seat. the Sirius antenna is about as a big as a cell phone, the XM is about half the size.
nashvegas.. hmm, I'm not as worried about the actual size of the antenna as much as the cord running.... I drive an SUV and was trying to think of the best way to do that.. do you have your trunk closed on top of the cord?
the antenna is attached to the back of the trunk. my backseat folds down, so it comes thru there, runs along the side and then under the mat and front seat, and comes out under the front seat. the cord it comes with is pretty long, so there is plenty of room. also, i've seen some people run the antenna on the passenger side of the car and have the wire run from the roof, down the frame of the door and then under the seat....if that makes sense.
That makes sense, I guess it can go thru the moulding or whatever without damaging the actual cord .. Thanks..
Have Sirius - the magnetic car antenna is not that big, and you just run the thread under the molding. Easy & doesn't damage anything. P.S. The XM MyFI sucks goat nads. You go anywhere inside or even in a park under a ton of trees or around abunch of buildings & the damn thing cuts out. Funny how the XM peeps are pushing this shoddy piece of equipment to proclaim their superiority. This while Sirius supposedly has a combo Sirius/IPOD in the works & is gaining insane amounts of subscribers, despite getting started almost A YEAR after XM did!
I've been dreaming for a portable satellite radio product to take to the gym. I was actually going to go out and buy the XM MyFi at Best Buy today. However, thanks to Rocket G, I decided to do a little research on the web about product quality. Thanks for preventing me from making a big mistake Rocket G. It appears as if these things can't really pick up service indoors, which defeats the purpose of taking it to the gym.
Drapg, my brother was about to do the same (he should have bought Sirius ) until he read a Forbes article that talked about the reception. Rocket Fan, I use the FM modulator and it sounds pretty good. I use it at 88.1 FM, which seems to bring in the best sound quality - of the 4 FM options - in Houston. Ideally you should have it "hard wired" into the back of your stereo, but I think that costs about 60-70 bucks to have done at Circuit City.
rocket g.. that's a good point about the hard wired thing, I assume it's possible to hard wire into the stereo I have in my car.. bose.. now to decide for sure which one.. the sportster seems to be the one that everyone is selling right now a lot of...
I would either go with the new JVC one, or the PNP 3 by Audiovox. There as been some problems reported with the Sportsters. It seems that a lot of them at times play songs really slow..like slowing down a record if you will. Kenwood is comming out with a new plug and play reciever at the end of Jan.
For those that are debating spending that Christmas cash on a Sirius setup...here is a link to a real good bbs devoted to it.. http://www.siriusbackstage.com/forum/index.php?sid=68ac334b0bd51f1d87bbc8d8fa3732d1 and if you arent sure if satellite radio is the way to go....all I can say is that mine hasnt been turned off except when I went to sleep...it is THAT good... the rock channels absolutely are the best...songs I havent heard on commerical radio in ages... also has a couple of cool comedy channels...and of course the NFL and NBA pbp channels... get it...now...Siriusly..
I find myself listening to RawDog 147 more and more. I love the old school Pryor, followed by Sam Kinnison and then they throw in some hilarious stuff from Chappelle. They also play some lesser known guys that are still pretty funny. They had Lewis Black on and I hadn't heard much of his standup before. He did a bit on Airport security that had me almost peeing in my pants.
We're going to be spending our $$ on a vacation next week, and our rental car had the option of Sirius for an extra $15. So we're going to use that as our "trial" to see how we like it. ...sigh... even if we get it, it will be confusing to figure out how to set it up, and then it probably won't be where I want to listen to it. Same with the other things you guys seem to be comfortable with such as DSL/broadband, DVDs, game systems... technology is moving too fast these days. Not to mention that some years I don't get a raise.
funny you should say that CAstor.....Im listening to Mad Dog right now as I type this...a little George Carlin on right now...heard Sam earlier..man I miss that guy..;( I find myself rotating between Mad Dog, Hair Nation, Buzzsaw, adn a bit of JazzCafe... Im lovig this thing more and more...after having it running for almost two days now...Im thinking this thing is the best thing since sliced cheese... Isabel, Im not sure which reciever they will have in it...but I think you will be surprised at how easy it is to get used to the interface...they have the catagories divided up, and you can choose which style you want to listen to, and then it should show you a list of what channels are in that catagory...it really is simple..and its the best listening you will do on a radio... wooo hooo...as I was raqpping this up....another Sam Kinison bit just started...the one on the Iraqi Army.....coool!
