That's funny. But, SIRIUSLY...oh, man, I could do that all day! Anyway, Mrs JB and I invested in Sirius yesterday. Holy crap, I'm in love (as much as any man can be with a satellite radio system). I almost can't turn off Pure Jazz 72. But, since last night, I've listened to all the rock stations at least some, saw that the Rockets/Hawks game was being broadcast (though it was the ATL feed), heard some classic Woody Allen stand-up, listened to Fresh Air on NPR and heard some cool music on PRI. Having no commercials is really cool, but the thing that kills me is the display of what artist and song is playing. That rocks!!! This little radio is my new best friend. Now, I need to get a second reciever so Mrs JB and I don't fight over it.
Right now, just in a portable boom box that can go anywhere - runs on batteries and an A/C adapter. I am going to get the car adapter soon. It is $12 per month. If you want an additional receiver, it is an additional $6/month. You can get discounts if you pay by the year or by the quarter. XM is a little cheaper ($10), but it just doesn't have the cool news stations (NPR, PRI, etc), the NFL (all games broadcast on Sirius) or the NBA. Plus, Clear Channel is an investor in XM. Yuck.
I've had Sirius for about a year..I really can't live without it. I'm in my car for most of the day and not having to hear commercials is the greatest thing ever. If you really want to look into sirius, I would look at www.siriusbackstage.com. XM also has a good site at www.XMfan.com Its a great site, and the forums are really helpfull. If you're trying to decide between sirius and XM here is a good article that was written the other day: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tm...1110/tc_techtues_zd/139050&cid=1739&ncid=1729 Its kinda generaly know that Sirius plays more hits and XM has a deeper playlist and more eclectic stuff. I know people always ask which service is better, but it really comes down to what kind of music you like.
our new car displays the song and artist off of most standard radio stations..... though all the stations suck so it doesn't really matter. I would love to get sattelite but still haven't justified the extra cash just for the radio
You're right. It's time I stop joking around... [ba-dum-dum!] or [RIM SHOT!] or [Dave Letterman's guitarrist's Base Line]
I just can't bring myself to pay $144 a year to listen to the radio in my car when I can get it for free. Even if it's a better product, I just don't listen enough to justify the cost. When I'm at home or work and listening to music, it's CDs or MP3s, not the radio.
I'm guessing you could plug it in to a line in on your cd player, or use one of those tape deals for tape decks. Although, it probably also has its own port that you put in the spot in your deck (replace current radio) It would be so sweet if it had global coverage, I would love to have tha gadget when i fly out to Saudi.
13 bucks per month, there's a car cradle you can buy for it that plugs into your cig lighter - you just need to adjust the antenna for the best signal. I also bought the boombox to plug the receiver into when im out in my byard or BBQing/tailgating. Alternatively, you can buy an in dash CD player (ton of brands available) for around 200 bucks that it "Sirius Ready."
The car adapter plugs into your cig lighter for power, and transmits wirelessly to an unused FM station on your radio.
The car adapters are different. Some actually connect to the radio but most of them broadcast on a frequency(which you can set). You just tune your car radio to that frequency then use the sirius tuner to set the sat station you want.
So this receiver is something you can easily carry around? I'm tempted. Just not sure if I would keep it at home or in my office. (my office is out of everyone's way, so I can play music) Shouldn't spend the $$ though. The "$12 a month" doesn't sound so bad, but it does add up (looking at the "$144 a year" figure... I know it's the same, but it sounds so much worse that way).
XM and Sirius both come with different tuners, but they both have portable ones and ones you can pop out and put into docking stations. XM just came out with a walkman type. They also I think worked with Cambridge Soundworks to create a speaker that is a docking station for an XM portable. You just pop the XM unit into the speaker connection and instant boom.
For a quick note: When using a car adapter, you will get differnet sound quality for different set ups. For the best sound quality to the worst the list is as follows: 1. Direct connect (RCA cables into a head unit). Such as a AUX input on a car stereo (some head units have these, some don't) 2. Wired FM modulator (When buying a Sirius or XM ready head unit, you must buy and FM modulator as well to get it to work) 3. The cassette adapter. 4. FM wireless Modulation (All the Sirius portable units have these as well as the new XM units) Like mentioned previously, the unit wirelessly transmits a signal to your radio on several unused station frequ.) The sound is similar to AM radio. I have a portable Sirius unit connected to my Panasonic head unit and it sounds a little better than FM stereo, but I love it. You can see who is playing on other stations and what song is playing without having to change the station. Also both companies have deals for buying longer term contracts. You can prepay for a year for less than $10 bucks a month.
For those trying to decide to make the jump: For a limited time, Sirius is offering a free receiver and free home or car adapter with the signing of a 1-year contract. Best. Deal. Ever.
XM has no contract commitments, it is 10X better than Sirius! Plus you will have the complete MLB package next season for the same price. Nothing beats that!!!
