Solid analysis, his defensive rating for the season was 118, which is truly pathetic, you just can't play guys who are that bad defensively.....but I wonder if you keep that same tone with players with even worse defensive ratings like Jalen Green or Eric Gordon.
I watched the 7 game streak too. He was magnificent. He was unconscious from 3, throwing in wild shots like it was easy pretty sure he was shooting 50% from 3 before getting that contract. He was taking 2-3 charges a game. Even at 40% 3s that a guy I can live with. No charges? Dumb fouls and 28 foot bricks? No starter. Role player keyword alert. Bench shooter excellent. Starter terrible bad no please. Role player keyword alert. In my ideal scenario, if kept he's the 3rd string 2 guard. Not the starter 3. Or the ever 3. Never ever ever will he play 3 again.
Lmao that's 14th lowest not the highest Rockeys had the 2nd worst net rating in the entire league, this is a really bad way to try to gauge his impact. His on vs off was a positive 3.5 All 3 of the metrics your trying to use are objectively against your arguments, maybe chill breh lol
He’s a fringe NBA guy, he’s nice to have for depth if the roster spot is available. Can hit some 3’s and makes hustle plays.
Not exactly apples to apples Bobert. Is Mathews the #2 overall pick? Is Mathews a teenager? Is Mathews expected to evolve into a star in a couple years? Or...at all? Jalen Green started to improve as a pesky defender by the end of the season. I'm not predicting DPOY's here, did he not grow in that regard? 0 to 1 is still an improvement. Did Garrison Mathews grow? Or did he just throw up like a million terrible shot selection 3s and also shot worse than Tate did at the end of the season? Oh yes he did look it up lol. I can't hate on Gordon. I mean I can, I have, but I won't. We know the deal: he's here until he's not. No sense in wasting time debating the effectiveness of a guy who is just getting the paper and waiting for his number to be called.
Is there anyone on this board who wants more than that from him? He’s been pushed into other roles out of necessity. He is a role player that can at least accomplish a few things while eating minutes when necessary. As we draft and trade for better players, he will get pushed down the depth chart. But he definitely has value, and it’s not less than we are paying him.
lol **** I read that wrong. I should've made the thread about how Garrison Mathews should be the point instead of KPJ because of turnovers.
Dude Mathews was the 3rd most efficient rotation player on the team last year, just stop. He has a higher TS and EFG than Tate. Mathews is an objectively efficient offensive players with efficiency WELL above league averages
Ah, okay, so that makes it okay to be even worse defensively then? Gotcha. Just so long as we have the story straight. BTW however, Jalen Green's defensive rating was actually worse (somehow) after the all star break than it was before the all star break. He was a remarkably pathetic defender all season long, though the team defense around him did improve later in the season, maybe that's why you thought he improved. I just love how some people harp on defense only when it fits the narrative they want to push only to completely ignore it when it goes against the narrative. Attempting to dump on Mathews is remarkably stupid when he's a role player on a REALLY good team friendly contract and you are at the same time trying to prop up players who did objectively worse overall when it comes to scoring efficiency AND defense.
He's a bargain. i hope he plays great and we can trade him to a contender in need of elite shooting at the trade deadline for their first round pick in 23 or 24.
I didn't say Jalen wasn't bad. I said he got better. Are you trying to imply Mathews was a good defender?
League average 21-22 3% .367 Mathews 21-22 3% .36 I'll keep going because it's more fun than the 85 threads about whether we should pick Banchero 3rd. (We should).
No, my point is that it's absurd to ask more of your bench role players than of your future stars.... also, according to the metric you chose, Jalen got worse defensively after the break, not better. If you excuse Green's considerably worse defense, you shouldn't expect more from Mathews. Given his role and his contact, Garrison Mathews is a steal of a player. Now if they need to include him in a trade, totally fine, but the idea that anyone would even entertain the notion of cutting him is simply beyond absurd. Like, it has to be wilfully stupid, that's the ONLY explanation.
Matthews shot 36% on a crappy team that was weak enough shooting that defenses could load up on him. He had to force a bunch of those 3's from way deep to get them off. And he still shot 36% on them. Put him on a contender and he'll shoot over 42% from 3 because he'll be getting wide open looks and won't have to force shots.
