So I'm watching Friday Night Lights and I'm thinking these high school football players are no different than any other teeage boys anywhere in the world. The motivation that pushes them to work unbelievably hard and sacrifice so much for glory in the eyes of their friends and family is the same motivation that fuels combatants everywhere. It's just the agenda of the people allowed to direct their paths that separate them. Young men will have passion and energy but little direction on their own. They can easliy be manipulated.

I guess thats not a scoop since old men have been using young men to fight their wars since the stone age. But its a good reminder that the young jihadist aren't so different from our sons. If we ever want to end the nightmare of terror we are going to have to find a way to divert their passions to a more acceptable path, away from the fundementalist agenda.

If I ran the CIA I might bomb the Middle East with pictures of Lindsey Lohan.

This thread is going to go downhill fast. Shame since it was a very coherent and logically thought out post.

I know, I thought it was pretty interesting too, especially the part about young men working hard for glory in the eyes of others.

... or our inner-city gangs, it occurs to me. Better to belong to something than to belong to nothing.

Have you seen the show on ESPN Classic about the real life story of these kids in this movie?

    my 2 penny's.

Most of the kids they use are the sons and daughters of people who have been killed or taken to prisons. The hate has been developed over the period of their lives, before something even tragic happens. They see the grim possibility of a future, for when they grow older their families may be taken away from them. Like a "ghetto" which is where most criminals originate from, the prey is the innocent because there is little hope for themselves and the cost means squat. I know this is an extreme example of situations but in the same aspect the people in Palestine are shown little light at the end of the tunnel. The structure of society keeps the deprived away from achieving success. In this case it’s a nations inability to reach peace because of a dreadful government and an insecure political situation.

Basically what I mean is that it’s not as if someone is going and telling these kids a lie…they are taking “a” situation and misguiding them…this can be done to anybody…child or no child…

Think about it some more and what you'll encounter is an indictment of the shallowness of the American culture.

    Or even a million basketballs.
Or a million baseballs and mits.
    Or a million soccer balls.

Imagine those raining from the skys! :D

Hey, a few thousand kids would use them. At least when bullets weren't flying.

Good post overall. I think something harder than Lindsey Lohan may be in order. If we could get the kids thinking about sex, maybe even jerking off or experimenting with their lady friends, then maybe they wouldn't be so eager to die.

They don't have a secular society over there. The difference is only in the eye of the beholder.

Unfortunately, many of them might prefer to have baseball bats instead.
