You're lying and you know it. For those of us who are trying to break into the industry, there is nothing better than word-of-mouth transfers.. They're free, and we shouldn't care. As far as I'm concerned, I've figured out how I can make a living. If I can just get people to enjoy my songs, I'd let them have them for the notoriety, alone. Again... that's just me. I really don't judge anyone's intentions.

several hundred people in my school have been sued so i've been clean from p2ps for several months. From what I hear, only mainstream songs and movies are being tracked and spied upon by RIAA, so there's even more reason to avoid them.
Not if you are a songwriter because you don't tour or do shows. You make ALL your money from royalties and publishing that are paid to you BEFORE recoup of production costs. Recoup costs are taken out of record sales BEFORE "performance royalty" payments are made to artists. Those recoup costs INCLUDE songwriting royalties and publishing paid to the writers out of album sale proceeds. This is particularly true when the artist performing on the record isn't the writer of the song. If you are a writer, you have no other income than what is derived from record sales. Period. I'm no fan of the industry, but if you wanted a car and weren't willing to pay for it, you wouldn't just drive one off the lot. You'd either buy it or you wouldn't. If you don't want to waste your hard earned money, you don't have to. Just don't buy anything. But that doesn't give you the right to take it. I know people don't like to consider music tangible property, but for those who spend hours and hours of their lives slaving over songs, they'd disagree. Plenty of indie artists choose to put their stuff out there for free. But that is their choice to give it away. When it ends up in peer-to-peer networks, that choice is taken away from them. But, I freakin' hate this whole argument. I've been in it too many times and I'm not going to bother with it any longer. You'll always disagree with me and I'll always disagree with you on it, so it is better just left at that. Why don't you pour another soda into your laptop and give us all a few more months of peace and quiet.
Jeff, that's cool that we have different views. That is the beauty of America. But don't argue me the point on the automobile, that is the point that i am making. A lease on a car only pays for what you are using. I don't mind paying for music, but if I am footing the cost of manufacturing, then give me a discount. This is my only beef. hit me up through my email if you would like to discuss this personally. I enjoy a good debate, and would be willing to see your side, just give me a valid argument.
good point studogg. never thought of it quite like that. but on a somewhat related angle; the cost of the songs over the internet are coming down in price. walmart just started a site and is charging 89cents a song. im sure if you give it a few more years prices will be around 49cents a song. and if that happens then i might start paying for the stuff when i download. but as it is i spend enough money on cds. i have about 500-600 of real ones to prove that point.
