those would be guidos. frat tools usually wear polos, khaki shorts, and sperrys.

why does it matter on my major? and i wont be switching until my sophomore year. how do you like the delta-sigs?

First, let me admit that I do not know very much at all about the frat scene at UT. However, based on my little knowledge, if you had asked me which three frats best represent the "stereotypical frat guy" (the good along with the bad), I'd have named these three.

I could be way off as I have no real knowledge of their inner workings, but this is based on limited first impressions as well as word of mouth.

    A few little anecdotes:

Pike- My very first night in Austin as a freshman I went to their famous annual foam party. I had had nothing to drink before, and didn't plan on drinking at all at the party (this was back in my sober stage). For some reason they were very hesitant to let me in, and kept asking me who I brought (meaning: girls) and who I knew. I do not know any Pikes personally, but this first experience (which I'm sure is very standard for fraternity parties) assured me that fraternity life was not for me.

Phi Psi- I have known plenty of Phi Psi's, and I must say that that if I am at a party, and one random dude is way drunker than everyone else and making a fool of himself, chances are he is a Phi Psi. Most girls I talk to do not like them.

Delt- No real knowledge except they have a sweet house on Dean Keaton, and I believe Matthew McConaughey was one.

I probably sound harsh, but believe me I do not have anything against frat guys. Some of my best friends are in frats, so I know each one has good guys along with idiots. But really, if you are dead set on joining one, I would say the best way would be to hang out with each of them, and join whichever one you feel most comfortable with.

    Hope this helps.

you have a point, but ive been in football all my life and im gonna miss the camaraderie and closeness we had in football. the closest thing i see to that camaraderie is in fraternities. and you and i know both know there are some weird ass people at Austin, I just would be a lot more comfortable with knowing. You keep saying that there are more to frats than just the partying but no one ever elaborates on that, thats why i started this thread so i could get enlightened on other aspects of frats.

So you were a CNS student as well? How hard were the science classes like chemistry and biology? What was your GPA and what field of profession are you going in to if you dont mind me asking. Thanks for your help btw.

I thought hanging out with your friends, drinking, and partying were things that basically every college guy liked to do, not just "frat guys?"

sae, fiji, and ka are the traditional old-money type fraternities at texas... sig ep, ato, delt are pretty solid as well from what i can remember. i was a kappa sig and swt and dont recall them being that great when i was around, but they had just gotten back on campus at that time.

ka got the boot a few years back (due in large part to a friend of mine)... not sure if they are back on campus or not.

Phi Psi is having a beer pong tournament at their house tonight and Delt is having a late-night tomorrow in case you wanted to check those two out before orientation finished.

I did Beta Alpha Psi. Not sure about DSP but BAPsi has a ****load of clout with a lot of the major companies including mine, KPMG..moreso than DSP because I'm involved in recruiting at UT and I know what the interviewers look for.

Surprised to hear someone going to med school is associated with the clowns I watched throwing coke cans off their roof at passing cars and breaking windshields then scurrying into the house. Classy bunch of guys those SigEps.

A business degree and pre-med route would set a student apart when it comes to applying to medical school. Med schools are tired of seeing the average biology student apply every year. With most business degrees you graduate with a set of employable skills, not really much with a biology degree.

Frats are a great thing to be a part of. It gives you very valuable networking and future connections especially in business if you join one with like minded people. I wasn't in a frat, but if I was to do under grad all over again, I probably would be part of one.

Disagree about the utility of combining an undergraduate business degree with a pre-med track for the sake of a higher salary/admission chance.

xcrunner is right, if you're going into medicine, forget the whole getting an internship at Morgan Stanley over the summer/i-banking/consulting route most of your McCombs peers wish to get. Like the military (officer), once you choose medicine (primary care->intensive specialties like surgery/anesthesiology), that is your life imo.

If you still want to do something with business, get an MBA (undergrad business degree NOT req'd) instead. But as far as "job skills" are concerned, the guy with only a BBA maybe gets a 2 year head start/2 notches higher than entry-level ahead of you in the corporate world.

Take Business Foundations/business minor so you have Finance 101, Acct 101, resumé-writing, report skills, etc. all figured down. There's really not much to business after the intro/core classes: it's nowhere near Natural Sciences or Engineering.

Get a solid GPA (3.4+) and MCAT score (35+), and whatever major you want. That's what'll get you into med school.

I never said I was a SigEp at UT. The thing about frats is that individual chapters vary greatly school to school. Just like chapters having some members that make people cringe, the national fraternity sometimes has chapters that make them cringe. I went to school in the Southeast so I haven't even met many brothers from Texas. But I can tell you from experience, having met brothers from GA, FL, SC, AL, MS, TN, VA, that not every guy in the same fraternity is alike. UT SigEp's probably have plenty of upstanding guys too.

It's true that biology majors are the bulk of people applying to med school, but I wouldn't tell someone to major in something else just to stand out. Major in something else if you really like it and can still nail your pre-med req's but don't think it'll magically give you a leg up in med school admissions. As long as you nail your classes it doesn't matter what you major in. Another thing to consider is that an admissions committee could just as easily look at a business major and think "maybe this kid doesn't know what he wants to do, maybe he's not sure he wants to do medicine".

And who cares if you have employable skills or not when you graduate if you're pre-med? If you take care of business and get into med school your first try then those employable skills don't even matter.

Out of the 38 business kids that applied to med school, 30 got in. Business had the highest percentage of people getting in to med school, every other major was about 50%.

And I hung out with FIJI the other night and man are they some ****ing stuck up douche bags.

Classic correlation/causation mistake. Being a business major doesn't make one more likely to get into medical school; there's no logical reason for that. Business, by virtue of having the highest admissions requirements, does probably have the best students high school stats wise. Those students would do well in any major.

It's the same thing as saying kids from ivy league's get into med school at a higher rate than state schools. That has little to do the quality of education and more to do with that fact that those ivy league kids were already screened as highly academically competitive (by virtue of getting into a ivy league school).

    Agreed.
I am an Alumni of AKPsi and have heard nothing but good things about the chapter at TU.
