http://www.click2houston.com/news/4783046/detail.html Foley's To Say Farewell To Houston HOUSTON -- Foley's -- a familiar name to Houston shoppers will be gone late next year, Local 2 reported Thursday. Federated Department Stores said it would convert hundreds of stores it will acquire through a takeover of rival May Department Stores to Macy's in order to get more exposure. All of the Foley's will be renamed Macy's or shut down, officials said, including the one in Houston's most famous mall, The Galleria. Foley's operates 69 stores in Texas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma, with 16 in the Houston area. The conversions will bring the total number of Macy's stores nationwide to 730. Federated released the following statement to Local 2. "The decision to expand the Macy's brand was based on careful study and new research on customer preferences in May Company communities." Some Houston shoppers were upset at the news. "I’m a Foley's shopper. I love Foley's. That's my favorite store," a shopper said. Others felt more nostalgic about the store, especially the downtown location. "We used to come up here as kids during the Christmas holidays," shopper Diane Sellers said. "Just to see something that's a piece of Houston history to change all of a sudden like that -- it's kind of sad because all our old history is now turning into something different." "As long as the merchandise stays the same, I think it's not going to make that big of a difference if the name goes," shopper Chelsea Palmer said. But her mom had a different perspective. "Foley's is very competitive with other stores on their clothing when they have their sales, which is on a regular basis. Macy's will have to continue to do that to keep Foley's clientele or they're going to go elsewhere," shopper Eileen Palmer said. None of the Foley's employees would comment to Local 2.
They're making a bad decision. Macy's has already experienced failure in penetrating the Houston market. Foley's was already a local success. Just a bad idea.
Agreed. I love Foley's! They have a sale every week. I can get a nice pair of slacks a button down and a tie for $65-75. Macy's sucks..... too pricey.
hmmm... i guess this is the end of sharpstown. it's sad, but i doubt that they'll open a macy's there.
Yes, but the tend towards larger furniture dpt's in fewer stores. Actually, I'm not supposed to be talking to the media (memo from May) I work at a Foleys sister co. Word is all mgmnt and employees will be kept on if not in the same position at same pay rate. Federated has gone on to say they are sensitive to those loyal to Foleys etc and the company line is the best of both companys will be retained. Changes will not occur till mid next year.
Wait, Foley's are still around? Anyways, I am an online shopper more or less for casual wear, and a Men's Warehouse shopper for formal wear. Dillard's is a bit more classy, and as far as I am concerned they are pretty similar.
For a while, I experienced the same thing... but then I was out of jail, and now I'm cured. HURRAY!!!
Don't see why Macy's can't do what they did with the Rich's department store chain -- absorb it but continue to operate under the name Rich's. Why not do that with Foley's, at least in the local Houston area where it's a household name??
"Local 2 reported..." What BS! They only "reported" it b/c Macy's made a national press release. Freakin' Channel 2! Always acting as if they'be "broken the Big Story."
Good riddens. I may have gone into Foley's maybe twice in all my life. Once I bought a polo shirt and it ripped when my dog bit it. Damn you Foley's!!! Oh and also another place less for soccer moms to visit. Younger ladies don't shop at Foley's. Only old hags do.
Foley's had kind of fallen by the wayside since there is better shopping now available in Houston, but back in the day, it was the only place to go for decent department store shopping. I worked in the Records & Tapes (i.e. Music) department at the Foley's in Memorial City during high school, and I worked as a stockboy at the Foley's in Sharpstown Mall during the summer before freshman year at UT. I still have one of my stockboy shirts, still fit into it, , and occasionally wear it onstage. I would wear it onstage when I lived in LA and the idiots would ask me "who is Foley?"
One of my first memories is my Mom going shopping there when I was about three. It was around the time when everyone was freaking out about children being kidnapped right under their parents eyes. Well, my Mom turns around for half a second and I'm gone, so naturally, she's hysterical. She's asking everyone if they've seen me and they're searching the store up and down. Where do they find me? In the Records & Tapes department flipping through albums. That's when my Mom knew I would spend every extra penny I had on music growing up.
Yeah... they should make polos that are dog-bite-resistant. WHAT DO YOU MEAN "OLD HAGS"??? My mom shops there, man! jk.
