I know this is total fantasy, but the whole Landis controversy has gotten my friends and I into a debate about how to fix sports that are severely affected by performance enhancing drugs.

My (unpopular) idea to fix baseball is this:

-Get rid of the catching the ball and you're out rule. (It makes a boring sport more boring)
-If you hit the ball out of the stands it's a walk (one base). Now, calm down and let me explain:
-Taking away a hitters incentive to hit the ball out of the park will equally remove his incentive to take the performance enhancing drugs that he know he can get away with.
-Home runs are lame anyway. Definitely far too easy for the players.

I guess what I'm saying is that we should inject skill as a requirement into baseball (batting).

First In-N-Out Burger sucks and now you want to change homeruns to walks.

The D&D is clearly the forum you belong in.

Haha, yeah, I should have re-read that.

I meant that skill could be further emphasized at the expense of brute strength.

Again, this was just a discussion about changes that could be made in sports to counter-act the drug problems.

Though I stil say baseball would be a lot cooler if you weren't automatically out when someone catches your hit.

I think when Torii Hunter robs somebody of a homerun that same batter should have to bat with his bare hands the next time he's up.

No, it makes a three hour game into a five hour game

Yes, because there is absolutely no skill involved at all in hitting a ball thrown at you 85-95 mph that curves and breaks about 400 feet...

I hope we wipe out ever record by anyone who has done drugs. That would be the most fair route if anyone would ever want to touch that ****.

Bye barry and ur 700+ hrs.

Now this is a change I can get behind. Let's raise the mound about a football field up in the air, and let the batter use two bats to get his hit. Like maybe katanas or something ninja like that.

Who was that asian player that pulled the drop kick on the catcher a year or two ago? MVP of the league, baby.

Then why aren't players doing more of it?

Hitting a homerun requires more skill than hitting a single.

    Case closed !

Wait, maybe we should all just play Cricket !!

Last week, Japanese scientists explaced... placed explosive detonators at the bottom of Lake Loch Ness to blow Nessie out of the water. Sir Godfrey of the Nessie Alliance summoned the help of Scotland's local wizards to cast a protective spell over the lake and its local residents and all those who seek for the peaceful existence of our underwater ally.

I think baseballs should be replaced with bullets, and that the pitcher should have a twelve gauge shotgun on the mound.

I mean, if you're going to be paid millions of dollars, you'd better earn it, beeyotch!

    ;) :D

If we're going to "fix" baseball, let's get REALLY radical.

Replace the three out system with a time limit. Give each team 8 minutes minutes per inning to score as many runs as they can with a 2 minute break between innings. Outs are scored in the normal fashion via fly balls, ground balls, strikeouts, ect, but there isn't a three out limit. If there is a play happening as the time limit expires, that play is allowed to continue until the person that hit the ball is either put out or scores. There is also a strict time limit between pitches to avoid a delay of game by the pitcher. This would eliminate the 10 throws to first by pitchers, unnecessary conversations between the catcher and pitcher, and of course the batter wouldn't even think about stepping out of the batter's box for 15 seconds to adjust his crotch and spit. If a home run is hit, then the batter and everybody on base simply heads straight to the dugout, or the clock simply stops until the next pitch is thrown.

Of course, there would have to be some sort of time out system implemented, perhaps something similar to the NBA with full timeouts and abbreviated timeout, but I think it would work.

or...we leave it the way it is since it's raking in cash and attendance has never been higher. you communists go change another sport! :) let's move around the 3 point lines again. or completely change hockey. but leave baseball alone!!!

Ray, people will come, Ray. They'll come to Iowa for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up your driveway, not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at your door as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you have a look around," you'll say. "It's only twenty dollars per person." They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it; for it is money they have and peace they lack.

And they'll walk out to the bleachers, and sit in shirt-sleeves on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere along one of the baselines, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes. And they'll watch the game, and it'll be as if they'd dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick, they'll have to brush them away from their faces.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again. Ohhhhhhhh, people will come, Ray. People will most definitely come.

Come on, man...baseball is always evolving.

How about this...aluminum bats! That would increase scoring, and that's what baseball definitely needs, more scoring. Better yet, put a pitching maching out on the mound.

Oh wait, the Astros already do that whenever their bullpen comes out. :D

    Let me ask you something

How long does it take to watch a typical NBA game?

How long does the last 2 minutes of any game last regardless of how close the game is?

If you ask me, basketball is a pretty boring sport to watch. Play-Play-Foul-Timeout-Foul-Play-Play-Foul-Foul-Timeout-Foul-Clock Issue-Foul-Play-Timeout and it keeps going

Yeah, its really fun when the game is real close and you actually have a team to root for.

But I want action at all times. I agree, you cant just watch a baseball game when you dont have a team you want to win. But when you do, its a great game. Every pitch is a new sequence really and you're at the edge of your seat at all time. Plus, while the chances are still pretty low, the game is never over until you get the last out. Anything can happen. Even with 2 outs in the 9th and thats why I love this sport more than anything!

But there are some things that might help the game. Say, if you walk someone, everyone should move a base. This gives more incentive to throwing strikes and maybe limit the amount of foul balls one can hit. Little things like that are a bit more appropriate. Frankly its a great game and should be left alone. ESPN has been showing a lot of LLW, golf, and tennis. Now all those sports make me miserable out of my mind...

i love all of the major US sports. no doubt. but baseball is much more of a passion for me. i miss it from the moment the last out is made. i wake up the next morning after the final game considering how long it is till spring training.

All Major sports, EXCEPT SOCCER and maybe GOLF, employ a timeout JUST FOR TV. That sucks ass. WTF is this: "we'll be back after this TV timeout..." WTF?

Yeah, let's break in the action so we can show a Zoloft or Ritalin commercial.

WTF is up with the timeouts...? Watch a high school football game... I bet it lasts a lot less time (barring the fact that the quarters are less time, of course).
