I like stuff on the Urban Cowboy, Smokey & Bandit soundtrack etc (Jerry Reed, trucking songs). Also Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline, Ernest Tubb, Bob Wills, older stuff I guess. I don't like new country at all. But I only really like it when I'm drinking.

Long list. Notice the suspicious lack on Garth Brooks on my list. Kind of hate that guy. The beginning of the end.
That's how I am. I had the same exact thoughts. I also like Pickin' Wildflowers, and thought the same thing of it. I also like anything by Garth Brooks, and many other country songs from the mid-90's that I grew up on.
The Redneck Yacht Club actually describes fairly accurately what takes place on many of the lakes in Texas. You find the party cove and tie up next to other boats. I've done it many times myself. However, they exaggerate a bit when they talk about the types of boats that people tie up - in reality they're usually nice ski boats (Air Nautiques, Moombas, Montereys, Cobalts) or cigarette boats (Scarabs, Bajas).
dixieland delight by i forget who you never even called me by my name - DAC boy named sue - cash pissing in the wind, up against the wall redneck mother, - jerry jeff whiskey river - willie
Willie Nelson - Railroad Lady Johnny Cash - Hurt For sheer comedic value Hank Jr. - If the south woulda won
I have a love for Dale Watson songs, and a similar opinion about his distate for what passes as country music these days. You can't go wrong with his Blessed or Damned. In addition I love Jimmy Dale Gilmore. The song Downtown is one of the most perfect songs there is. I also think everyone should listen to some Wayne Hancock. Some of his stuff is pure heaven. Start with Thunderstorms and Neon Signs or That's what Daddy wants, and move on from there. There is Jesse Dayton who is ok. The Derailers are excellent. Almost anything by Hank Williams Jr., Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, George Jones, and Merle Haggard are as good as country gets. Stuff I don't like is Garth Brooks, Shanaia Twain, Dixie Chicks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, etc.
Ditto to all that. I'm also starting to like Miss Leslie and Her Juke-Jointers as well as Clay Farmer, both from Houston. Back in the day, say 1997 or so, I really loved the Hollisters. Top 40 country, bleh. At least old country Top 40, say pre-1990, was charming even when it was corny. Now, the charm has vanished only to leave the corniness. Among today's popular artists, the only one I like that much is Dwight Yoakum. This may be heresy in Texas, but even George Strait leaves me flat.
I was going to first say that I hated country music but there are a handful of people that are okay - mainly Trisha Yearwood and early Faith Hill. So, any of their songs are ones that I like. Also, any song by John Michael Montgomery is going to be okay with me. Now, if you include more rock people like Neil Young, The Band, Uncle Tupelo, Wilco, etc, then there are a lot more songs I could name. But people like Toby Keith, Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, George Jones, Sammy Kershaw, etc - I would rather get a root canal than listen to their songs.
Certainly not the best country song, but maybe qualifies for the best country song title ever: "Too much month at the end of the money" ...can't remember the artist. D R
Doug Stone - I never knew love Steve Warner - Lonely women make good lovers George Strait - Amarillo by Morning David Allen Cole - You never even called me by my name Clay Walker - Rumor has it Clay Walker - Hypnotize the Moon Trace Atkins - Every light in the house is on Clint Black - Put yourself in my shoes
id say that what goes on in contemporary country radio/cmt is nothing more than pop music w/ pedal steels and fake country accents. george strait was the last of the true country singers, imo. as for my favorite country songs... willie nelson - every song of off red headed stranger and shotgun willie. sad songs and waltzes/stay all night/whiskey river/devil in a sleepin' bag/blue eyes cryin in the rain merle haggard - silver wings (one of the saddest, prettiest songs ever written)/okie from muskogee/mama tried hank williams - im so lonesome i could cry/your cheatin heart/ theres a tear in my beer/lonesome whistle/house of gold
I have been getting into classic county over the last few years. Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, , George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Merle Haggard, Patsy Cline, Charlie Rich, Johnny Cash, Marty Robbins, and Buck Owens. Can't forget Willie Nelson, either. "Red Headed Stranger" is a great album I picked up recently. I really love the Flying Burriot Brothers and Gram Parsons, as well as more recent people like Dwight Yokum and the Derailers.
