My top three: Keith Moon--Unbelieveable and unconventional. How can you listen to the Who and not agree he was the best? Brilliant runs and still kept Pete and John together. Stewart Copeland--Understated brilliance that drove the Police. Really cool flourishes and contributed melody as well. Mitch Mitchell--Jazz-influenced Hendrix drummer was both fast and technically proficient. Just listen to "Fire."
Mitch Mitchell, very underated. Had a special chemistry with Hendrix. Hendrix tried Buddy Miles for awhile but it didn't last, so he went back with Mitch. John Bonham Ringo
All of the above, of course. Hell, I think Zak Starkey, Ringo's son and Keith's replacement is pretty great. Here are some others I like: Pete Thomas of the Attractions Dave Grohl of Nirvana Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones Al Jackson, jr. of Booker T and the MG's and the Stax house band Danny Goffey of Supergrass Kenny Arnoff of John Mellencamp's band
ditto ditto and ditto S. Copeland will be drumming with The Doors reunion or whatever you want to call it.
Stewart Copeland John Bonham Terry Bozzio (Missing Persons, Frank Zappa) Rod Morgenstein (Dixie Dregs, Steve Morse, Winger <-- not his best, but hey) Carter Beuford (Dave Matthews) Simon Phillips (Pete Townsend, The Who) Earl Harvin (Seal) Vinny Coahlita (Frank Zappa, Sting) Omar Hakim (Sting) Steve Gorman (Black Crowes <-- tremendous solid rock drummer) Steve Smith (Journey) Bill Bruford (Yes) Neil Peart Manu Katche (Peter Gabriel, Tears for Fears, Sting) Steve Jordan (session drummer, Keith Richards, Oleta Adams, original David Letterman drummer, etc) Abraham Laboriel, Jr. (Paul McCartney, kd lang, Vanessa Carlton) Steve Gadd (Steely Dan, Eric Clapton, etc) Kenny Aaronoff (John Mellencamp) Pat Mastelotto (The Rembrandts, XTC) Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley, Duncan Sheik) - he's from Houston Johnathon Mover (Joe Satriani)
can't remember her name, but she was Lenny Kravitz's drummer and also a jazz drummer...seems like it is Cindy something. She is the best looking drummer and a pretty good one. Also, Neal Peart and John Bonham.
1. Mark Brzezicki- The drummer from Big Country, Also drummed for Pete Townsend as well as a session drummer. He's seldom mentioned these days, and his work with Big Country is simply amazing. He's doing so much you think he's got 8 hands. Not that Phil Collins is the best drummer in the world but he is adequate, and during the Prince's Trust concert, the two were playing together. Mark, was adding so much more to the part than Phil. It was amazing. I also saw him live with Big Country, and the first three Big Country records really showcase his amazing talent. 2.Keith Moon - Very innovative, and inspiring drummer. 3.Stuart Copeland. I was glad to see him get as many mentions as he did.
Let me add that I used to love to watch Buddy Rich on the old Ed Sullivan show or on Johnnie Carson. He was a pioneer.
I love that song FIRE.....Mitch Mitchell's drumming is the highlight of that song....and with Hendrix that says a lot.
Ringo Starr Conrad Choucroun Tom Ardolino CBFC ps. BobF-- that's not Ringo in that picture, where'd you get that?
