I love reading all of these authors to kids. I find Silverstiens whole life story interesting too and I think that makes his poems even more interesting.

He did cartoons for penthouse and wrote alot of Dr. Hook's songs (Sylvia's Mother, Cover of the Rolling Stone) and wrote "A Boy Named Sue" for Johnny Cash.

My favorite books to read out load to kids are "Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day" and "Where the Wild Things Are"

So we're talking about young childrens books, then? I tend to go for older childrens books, though the Olivia series by Ian Falconer is absolutely adorable!

Christopher Pike was better than RL Stine...

actually as a kid it was Franklin W Dixon (Hardy Boys) and Carolyn Keene (Nancy Drew)

Of course the ones I was reading were the modern day incarnations of the Nancy Drew Files and the Hardy Boys Files. (I especially liked the combo SuperCase Files with both sets of characters)

Also included would be Ann M Martin's Babysitter's Club books.

    I always liked Roald Dahl.

Read every single Babysitter's Club book too. (Hayesfan, I swear, we're twins).

Out of that list? Definitely Silverstein.

hmmm I liked the Clifford the Big Red Dog books and my all time favorite was a flip book about a train... ummmm... I can't remember what it was called.

Hopefully one of you can remember it.

The pictures were all in black and white and you would read it normally, then flip it over and finish the story from the back to the front.

I can't remember the plot of it either, but I must have checked it out from the school library 20 times in first and second grade.

Separated at birth and rediscovered one another on clutchfans! LOL I own most of them still. I have an entire bookcase filled with Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Babysitter's Club books.

I suppose you could be more specific still. Some of these authors hit a different age than others. I can finally read things like Dr. Suess or Sendak to my 3-year old. At 2, it was Boynton and Carle. I like Boynton, but at 32, I prefer the greater sophistication of a book aimed at ever-so-slightly older kids.

I've read that ^ book, Hayesfan... my wife had to study it for her Children's Lit education class. Very very nice and strange book. :)

For < 8-year-olds, I recommend the OLIVIA series by Ian Falconer. Those are hilarious.

    I also recommend this one:

My girls acted this out for me and my wife. We laughed for hours.

For those with kids... do ya'll still read to them? Never stop reading to your kids... and make the weird voices... they love them... at least mine do. :D

Cesar^Geronimo... I meant... you misspelled Dr. Seuss in both the poll and OP.
