My draft was yesterday (sandbox), and I feel I came off pretty well. My roster ended up looking like this: PG: Andre Miller Mark Jackson SG: Kobe Bryant Allen Iverson SF: Paul Pierce Juwan Howard Wally Sczerbiak PF: Antawn Jamison Maurice Taylor C: Patrick Ewing Erick Dampier Iakovos Tsakalidis My league is head to head, with a starter from each position, and then 3 backups of my choice. SG with Bryant and Iverson is easily my best position (I drafted Bryant round 1, and Iverson round 2). I drafted all of my centers fairly late, as Shaq went #1, and I didn't want to waste a 2nd rounder on Dikembe or Robinson, so I went with the standard grizzled veteran (Ewing), young underachiever (Dampier), unknown rookie with loads of potential (Tsakalidis) trio. PF is worrisome over injuries, but I snagged MoTay in round 11. SF could be the difference for me. I got Paul Pierce in round 3 (Odom and Kidd were picked right before me I believe), and know he'll be healthy. Many of you probably question the pick of Howard. Well, I went on a hunch with him. There's a chance he could return to his 20-9 form, especially with MJ around, and Strickland and Richmond even older. Even if he doesn't, 15-6 out of the small forward in round 9 is not bad. I'm not the one paying him 17 mill. Wally World was picked round 12, as without Joe Smith and Sealy, 2 less weapons, means even more shots for Wally, that and he's a year older. I was happy with my first 2 picks, as I thought about taking Iverson round 1 (6th overall) but went for Kobe, who I feel will be good for around 25-5-5. At PG, I'm a little worried. I completely forgot about Miller, and drafted Mark Jackson first, who with Vince Carter, I feel can get 9-10 assists per game. Miller may evolve into a PG a tier below Francis, and showed flashes of being a triple double threat last year. Now, the notable free agents: PG-Baron Davis, Howard Eisley, Steve Nash, Chucky Atkins SG-Larry Hughes, Corey Maggette, Quentin Richardson, Dermarr Johnson SF-Rashard Lewis, James Posey, Shawn Marion, Jonathan Bender, Sean Elliott, Darius Miles, PF- Bo Outlaw, Horace Grant, Ben Wallace, Joe Smith, Keon Clark, Tim Thomas (listed as a PF), Al Harrington, Jermaine O'Neal, Robert Traylor, Jerome Moiso, C-Matt Geiger, Michael Doleac, John Amaechi, Bryant Reeves, ZYDRUNAS ILGAUSKAS (I spent 3 rounds looking for him, and I couldn't find him) I'm nearly certain I'm going to pick up Ziggy....who should I drop, Dampier? One of my SFs? Or go with just one person at PF or PG? My last thoughts are on who to start. My feeling is this: PG-Miller SG-Bryant SF-Pierce PF-Jamison C-Ewing Flex1-Iverson Flex2-Taylor Flex3-Howard (or should this be Ziggy if I pick him up?) Thanks. Wally looks real nice, and I do think he'll have a nice season. But Rashard, with all he brings to the table including minutes, points, rebounds, etc. I think will probably have the better season, and in the leagues I'm in, much more trade value. I'd drop Wally for him. You also might want to consider dropping Jackson for Chucky Atkins. I've liked Atkins for a while as my sleeper of the year, and he's backing me up so far in the preseason. He'll score a lot and play a lot on a Detroit team missing a lot of pieces. One final suggestion- Tsakilidas is a 3rd-stringer at this point in Phoenix, and really doesn't look like he's going to be much of a force this year. Jermaine O'Neal IMO will have a HUGE year in Indiana, so I'd consider taking him if you just want another big man. But if you want another center, I'd probably take a chance on Amaechi. He should score a lot with the double teams McGrady and Hill will create, and he's really good from the 15-18 foot range. ------------------ President of the Jason Collier police! You must grab J.O'Neal and Marion off waivers. They will have monster years. Waive Tsakiladis, he is a project and will only play during garbage time this year. They are saying Cliff Robinson will play a lot of center and Marion will get minutes at SF and SG. O'Neal will be THE BEST center in the east. I wasn't sure on Tsakalidis. I thought he was the one slated for the PT. Unfortunately, Jermaine is listed at PF. Should I drop both Dampier and IT and pick up Ziggy and O'Neal? On O'Neal as best center in East, it's a possibility. But, I feel if Ziggy stays healthy, he'll absolutely rip the East to shreds. I'm going to take a wait and see before waiving Dampier: One poor team drafted Zo and Smits as their centers. The same team happens to have Tim Duncan, and Stephon Marbury. Same for Jackson-If Toronto plays him a lot, I could see him leading the league in assists. So far, it looks like I will: Waive Tsakalidis, pick up Ilgauskas Waive Wally, pick up Rashard Lewis and if I don't trade Dampier (or Ewing) to the centerless team, drop Dampier for Jermaine O'Neal. What about Larry Hughes? I'm surprised no one mentioned him, as I think he'll score close to 20 a game (of course while shooting about 30% ). sf-vince carter: Sure bet keeper, great. sf-rashard lewis: I'm not as sold as some others, as I'm not sure Seattle will start handing him his 35-40 MPG right away, but he's not bad at all. g-McGrady: Very good to have. g-Allan Houston: Also a keeper pf-Brian Grant: Expect big numbers without Zo, and in the East. c-Jermaine O'neal: Likely to be huge, but there's a chance he could become Cato East. (big preseason, nothing regular season). At center, he's pretty good. c-Gatling: Not sold at all. Not exactly happy to be in Cleveland, and the feeling's mutual. Still, centers are tough to come by. g-maggette: Tough call. In LA, they have a ton of these swing men, so he may not get big minutes. If he does, he's nice. f-shawn marion: With Penny and Googs hurt, he'll get PT, and is a very nice player. pf-danny fortson: He could rack up the boards, but there's a chance minutes could crunch with Foyle, Dampier, and Jamison sharing PF/C pg-chucky atkins: Has the starting job, and should do nicely. pg-tony delk: I would drop him, but it depends on the FAs. While he'll get some time early on, he's just not much of an impact player. f-laphonso ellis: Can be an ok role player, but way too many injuries. Out of curiousity, who are some of the FAs? Look around for a PG who'll be steadier than Delk, and a backup center or PF that could be in the rough. Grant hasn't exactly been injury free. ------------------ The Serious Police are watching. I disagree on Delk. He will put up very good numbers. He will play the 1 as well as the 2 guard positions. If Kidd goes down for any length of time (he usually does) Delk will be very valuable. Bob-All the while, he's still a back up, and even with the Suns really screwy lineup right now with Penny and Googs down, Rogers is the 6th man. He'll have some breakout games, but if my starter was Atkins, I'd want a backup that was going to get minutes (preferably as a starter). He's never been a passing PG, and doesn't do anything other than score exceedingly well. In that department, he's not Cuttino Mobley. Maybe there's no one out there better, but there's a chance. If I was to take a backup PG, I'd likely take Brevin Knight over Delk just because he'll put out the assists. A sleeper candidate would be Chauncey Billups, who I've heard will start at SG, but may be listed as a PG. On other notes, I'm angry Ziggy was taken before I could nab him off the waiver wire. Lewis was too. So, I'm thinking now, drop IT for Jermaine O'Neal, and then Wally for Hughes? Nike, Brevin Knight info: Knight had offseason surgery and will likely miss the first month and a half of the regular season. By the time he returns, Andre Miller will have firmly established himself as the starting point guard in Cleveland. Don't bother drafting Knight. Just look at Delk's amazing #'s in only 3 pre-season games.
