Walmart is price matching all low prices for the 1 or 2TB HD's. A friend of mine picked me up two yesterday at $59.99 each. Both WD. Awesome price!
I guess, really not sure though. She called me and said they were matching all prices from others stores.
She lives in Baytown. I only received a text from her about it so I don't know all the details. All I know is I am a happy camper!

Seagate 1 TB external for $49.99 at Best Buy : http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Seagate...1.p?id=1218065495073&skuId=9238121&st=seagate 1 tb external usb&cp=1&lp=1 FYI, I wouldn't touch a Seagate anything. They've had crap reliability lately.
So I'm thinking of getting an external soon. It's been a while since this thread was last active so I'm wondering if things have changed. What do you guys think of a Seagate Expansion 500gb 2.5"? What about a WDC 500gb Passport? I'm not tech savvy at all and the last external I bought was a Maxtor POS I got in 2006ish, which crapped out on me. Not going with Maxtor again. But I also know nothing of these other brands and from what I've read from a quick google search Seagate and WD have their fair share of problems. Right now my only choices are these two, so which one is the better one? WDC costs a bit more btw. Muchas Gracias in advance.
^ when it comes to hard drives its really a roll of the dice. I've had great experiences with pretty much every brand except WD but others I know said their seagate failed right away and loved WD. I have come to just go with the specs on the drive and price point - and a good warranty policy and I believe WD and Seagate have some of the best (5 year). if you are looking at a portable drive then i would definitely look into the casing of the drive itself. I had a portable drive that the outside case didnt offer too much protection and it messed up the drive when I was transporting it during a move.
Why are external HD's such a crap shoot? It's just a regular old HD in an external casing with a power supply, right? Internal HD's don't have near the failure rate y'all are talking about, so what's the difference? Can you recover your stored info if it does fail without having to take it somewhere and spend a ton? My 1TB WD has been humming along nicely for a couple of years now. I got it for ~$80, iirc.
Is this for home usage or you're carrying it around? I would probably go with the one that have longer warranty which is Western Digital.
Internal hard drive you don't shake it around while it's running or powering down. Also have better air circulation. While external people shouldn't be moving their hard drive while it's running or powering down and easily accidentally drop once awhile. Another thing is that external drive trap the heat and some hard drive produce plenty of heat.
You are better off buying a 2TB hard drive and an external enclosure separately. Because most External Hard drive that come with the enclosure is 1 to 2 yr of warranty. A Hard Drive is usually have 3 yrs warranty and you have more variety of HD to choose from.
Thanks guys. So I take it that I should go with the WD. It's not for home use and I'll be traveling with it. Now I'm having doubts. Maybe I should just get a 200-250gb external and buy 2 with the other one for back up rather than risking it with just 1 500gb? So is there a protocol in the way I should be using them? Basically don't touch it nor move it while it's on and leave it be for a while after I turn it off to let it cool down?
I'm about to buy a Toshiba external HD but I want to back up the stuff I'm backing up on the external HD and I've heard one can do that on certain internet sites. Would any of you be able to recommend any sites I might be able to use to backup my files and documents that I plan to backup on the external HD?
That is a good deal. I have this drive and i paid about 15000yen. it's fast and reliable thus far. I've had it for about 7 or 8 months.
