Never, EVER assume anything. Just ask. I know people who got MARRIED without have serious discussions about money, kids, family, where they wanted to live... Better to get used to being direct and honest now rather than waiting until you are in some situation that is more difficult to leave.

As a male, advising a female.... You might consider your relationship exclusive (a.k.a. you're his girlfriend), but he might not it exclusive. Have dinner with him and say something like, "Hey - I really enjoy the time with each other and I'm feeling like we should clarify our relationship a little. I'm feeling like we're in an exclusive relationship and that we're boyfriend/girlfriend. Does that sound about right?" There. That wasn't so hard. Now you'll know if you are or aren't exclusive. It's like when Hyman Roth was talking to Michael and he said, "I'm going to lie down, maybe take a nap. When I wake up, if the two million is on the table, I'll know I have a partner. Well, basically how it works is that every girl is the girlfriend of thadeus (and sweet-love-making-partner) until thadeus says otherwise, so if a guy asks thadeus for permission to borrow one of his girlfriends then you know it's real.
