Pair Indicted For Burglarizing Patrick Ewing's N.J. Home

    POSTED: 12:51 pm EDT September 3, 2004

NEWARK, N.J. -- Two people already jailed on burglary charges were indicted Friday for breaking into the home of former New York Knicks star Patrick Ewing and stealing jewelry including his 1984 college championship ring from Georgetown University.

Alize Bethune, 33, of Plainsboro, and Daniel Gatson, 32, of Teaneck, were charged with three counts each of burglary and theft, Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli said.

They are charged with breaking into Ewing's home in Englewood Cliffs in 1999, and stealing more than $300,000 worth of valuables. In addition to Ewing's college championship ring, the haul included expensive gold watches, a diamond bracelet, a fur coat, electronic and computer equipment, several New York Knicks jerseys, and the player's Mercedes Benz and Lincoln Navigator, both of which had been parked in his garage.

Detectives later found both vehicles in a parking garage in New York City, and the ring was recovered and returned to Ewing when someone offered it for sale on an Internet auction site.

Michael Mordaga, chief of detectives for the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, said Gatson is serving a prison term for an unrelated burglary conviction. Bethune is in jail awaiting trial on unrelated burglary charges, Mordaga said.

Ewing, who was voted one of the top 50 players in NBA history, retired in 2002 after 17 years in the league. The 7-footer led Georgetown to three NCAA finals, including the 1984 title, before becoming the No. 1 pick in the first NBA lottery draft, but never won an NBA title.

Yeah, wouldn't want them talking about how he improved Yao's game and helped coach the Rockets back to the playoffs after 4 years. Whew!
