    Over qualified

What? Just give me a position in the company without thinking I'm coming after your job.

It's just rhetoric for the lost minds of an ancient civilization. There's always iced tea in New Hampshire.

btw....same damn thing happened to me with SWA. Applied for a ramp agent position at Hobby. Had my management degree from UH...the interviewer/supervisor obviously did not...I never had a chance. In hindsight, I would've had his job in six months...b****! :D

Exactamundo agreeing with you. I got the same from the DENNY's on FRY Rd. when I needed to get a second job. I'm all "WTF...? I just need some extra cash... I'll effin' clean your tables, fool!" Not even a "host" chance.

It's frustrating. I asked for a full time position so it is worth my time, and so I can pay the newly added costs of after school child care that would ensue, and I basically got the "all we have is part-time, with hours anywhere from 7:15 AM to as late as 6:30 PM" knowing that I applied for a 40 hour/week 8-5... That last Thursday at 8:00 AM (when I applied) there were 6 or 7 spots available....

Don't call me at :15 'til 5:00 PM on a Tuesday (4 business days later) to tell me that you'll "keep my application and resume on hand for 90 days, and if anything happens" you'll call.

Perhaps they think you will leave soon.

Correct. The "overqualified" excuse is overused but it is very often legit. Nobody wants to waste time and effort bringing someone up to speed and have them leave in a few months.

Hmmm. I did not give them any reason to think I would leave soon.

My wife thinks that the HR person that called me was actually intimidated by my resume. I have several years of management and sales, but was applying for support position based on hours and schedule.

Is it that hard to believe a person wants the job they apply for?

Why apply for a job you don't want? Why play that game?

Why don't you just "dumb down", understate your resume?

    Example:

    Truth: Manager of store

    Understated: Assistant manager of store

a coworker of mine has a Masters degree from UCLA and was having trouble finding work. he dropped the Masters from his resume and landed the first job he went in for after that... it really is a case of someone afraid that you are smarter than them...

No, you would be Almu if you started this thread and then never replied back.

That is what is called "pulling an Almu."

Its a totally legitimate concern. People who are over qualified get bored with their job, don't listen to orders because they know better, and eventually quit when they get a better offer from another company or group. The trick to getting the job is to tell them why you want the job and give them reasons why you would be happy and stick with the job regardless of what comes up.

Just do like Kevin Spacey's character did in American Beauty when he got told he was "overqualified".

I recall going on interviews when I was in the process of getting my bachelors degree and being told that I wasn't qualified because I didn't have a degree.

And then when I went back to some of the same places with a degree, I recall being told that I was overqualified because I had a degree.

I think they were just looking for an excuse and didn't want to go with "creepy looking"

I know the feeling m8. It feels like you wasted 4 yrs in school getting the stupid degree for nothing.
