I think Im a bit confused on a rather simple matter...

As I stated in another thread, I want to hook up my 360 and computer to the net at the same time. I currently have to un-hook 1 to hook up the other. I have a router that I got about a year ago and Im thinking it works fine but neither the comp or xbox live work when hooked up (computer & 360 - router - to wall - to modem across house). What Im starting to think is that I could have different cable wires (cat-5, cat-6, etc) and they are conflicting with each other? Could I be right and if so what kind of (matching) cable wires should I get?

On the cable itself does it have any writing on it as to what type of cable it is. Are you positive that the router works?

Those would be 2 first questions I would ask. Then we can go from there.

Right now you hookup from your highspeed to the Router and then the router to both of your units and neither is getting internet?

Im currently not at the house to check any writing on the cables but Ive wondered about the router working itself. From what I can I rememeber, it worked before just not very good, or as good as I wanted I guess.

    - highspeed to router, router to computer and xbox

Id rather not go in this direction but if it is a broken router, Ill need to get a new one. Whats the best type of router for what Im trying to do?

if you were having problems before your router might have just died, but definetly worth checking before you get a new one. If you have anyone with an extra set of ethernet cables you can test to see if it works with those that way you can see if it is your wires or your router. Keep changing out variables to you find the problem.

You can also try resetting your router with the reset switch to it goes back to default settings just in case.

As far as routers goes, their prices have really dropped im sure you can get a decent one for under 30 bucks these days at fry's or best buy. Maybe even lower with rebates.

I think the problem might be that you aren't giving the devices (PC, 360) time to get a network address from the router. I see this all the time and it is very common.

The easiest way to get things going is to turn everything off. Then turn it back on in this order, allowing about two minutes between each:

    Cable Modem
    Router
    PC
    360

Give the PC and 360 a little time to get an internal network address. If you can get on the internet on your computer, then you know that the router is doing it's job. The 360 should work as well at this point.

6 UTP 500MHz - this is the cable from wall to router. havnt found the other cable yet that i will be using. the calble from 360 to router is a cable that came with the system.

also, wall to router. router to computer. everything works fine so far. using it right now but the 360 isnt hooked up yet.
