By Andy Katz. He has the Rockets taking Pau Gasol at 13, Alvin Jones at 19, and Kedrick Brown at 23. He claims the Rockets just got back from Europe scouting Gasol. http://espn.go.com/nba/s/2001/0520/1202015.html

That would suck. I would be suicidal if the rockets choose those three crappy players. Those three are almost as bad as last years selections.

The only knock I've heard on Gasol is that he's soft, and that label is usually put on every foreign player. He seems like a guy who would fit in well on this team, especially considering the fact that Rudy has been rumored to want to attack the zone. Foreign talent has dramatically helped the Kings and Mavs, so what the hell, draft him. If he resembles any of the good young foreign players in the league today(Turkoglu, Peja, Nowitzki), then I want him on this team.

This shows why you should trade up to get a really good player that everyone knows and is the sure thing, instead of 3 sorry ones that look like busts especially that 7'1 foriegn guy.

Yeah we all know those 7 foot tall foreign guys suck, especially those 7 foot foreign guys that can shoot, damn they really suck. We need guys that can't shoot on this team, but when given a clear lane to the basket could throw down a mean dunk. That's what I'm looking for in this draft, who needs shooters when you could get a guy that could compete in the slamdunk contest...

Yeah, since some in Europe call him a young Nowitzki, he really must suck... I sure wouldn't mind taking a chance on him, esp. if we keep one of the other picks so that one can have an impact next season.

There aren't very many "sure things" in drafts. Draft results prove it.

Let me ask you and LilFrancis a question. How many times have you seen Pau Gasol play? If the answer is zero, please refrain from calling the guy crappy. Tell me one difference in this guy in Europe and Dirk Nowitzki in Europe. The scouting reports on Pau seem very similar to those on Dirk, and obviously Dirk isn't crappy-- in fact he's one of the top 10-15 players in the game. And, for all of you criticizing last year's draft, please tell me what realistic player available for the Rockets has shown to be worth more than Jason Collier and a first round pick this year. The draft as a whole last year had very disappointing first seasons. Again, unless you have seen Gasol play, and unless you have a legitimate and realistic plan the Rockets could have used to do better last year than Collier and a 1st rounder last year, please shut up. Thank you.

Pau Gasol is generally regarded as one of the premier players in Europe.

    http://nbadraft.net/profiles/paugasol.htm

He is 7'1" with long arms and is still growing. From the linked article:

"When playing at his true SF position he has no comparison in Europe. He can shoot 2 pointers, can slam (he loves it), can run in the fastbreak, and can play in low and high post. He is a complete player. Has a bright future in the NBA."

I have been on European message boards and everyone that has SEEN him play raves about him. Perhaps we should keep an open mind.

A 7' small forward who can shoot? Sounds alot like a guy we already have in Langhi.

But if the ESPN prognostication is right, then Jefferson would still be available at 13 - IMO, he's just what the Rockets need at SF.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but is it just me or are some of Gasol's stats really bad especially since he's considered one of the best in Europe. The main ones that stand out in my mind are his FT% and PPG... I hope I'm wrong but I'm just looking at those stats at http://nbadraft.net/profiles/paugasol.htm

Damn that was a pretty scary read.

If I were the Rockets, I wouldn't take him and I doubt they would take him with the 13th pick, maybe with a later pick.

I'm just amazed with how many people whine about the draft last year yet they never seem to mention realistic players the Rockets should have chosen instead of Collier PLUS a future first round draft pick.

It's easy to b**** and moan, but it's another thing to actually provide better alternatives.

Jamal Magloire would have been nice. He certainly brings more to the table than Jason Collier. He brought toughness and rebounding in limited minutes for the Hornets, especially in the playoffs. Jason Collier brings the Rockets zero boards and two points per game. And amazingly, he once scored 10 points. What great use of the ninth pick that was. I can't wait to see who the Rockets take this year. Without a doubt, that player will be a soft shooter, solving none of the Rockets problems.

Jason Collier was picked with the 15th pick.
