For all you Longhorns who brag about championships from before you were born, except RMTex who actually might have been at this game. 2:00PM central today.
I wasn't there, but I do remember watching it on TV with my Dad when I was 8. The hype was so huge for this game I think everyone watched it somehow someway.
Ahh yes, the "Game of the Century" that had Richard Nixon in attendance. Rumor has it that Bush may attend Saturday's game since it's not too far from Crawford. I'll be leaving tomorrow morning for Fayetteville around 8:30AM. It's supposed to be a 7-hour drive from Austin. We rented a car, as I don't want my Audi to be vandalized by the necks. I've heard some really awful things about Hog fans, and I can't figure out why they still have such a hatred for all things Texas. We'll be staying in Fort Smith, which is about 50 miles SW of Fayetteville. All hotel rooms in Fayetteville have been booked solid for like a year now. I'm going to be rowdy as hell over there, and watch Texas beat Arkansas like a rented mule.
i grew up watching this game on tape with my father and hearing about it over and over again. the hype for this game may have exceeded anything ever seen before or since on the college level. they literally moved the date of the game at the beginning of the season to save this showdown for later. the phone operators answered the phone that week with, "beat Texas, may i help you?" i've heard my dad's account of that game so many times, i feel like i was there.
btw, rm95, I'm not trying to take a shot at you by saying I went there like that other poster would. I'm just pointing out the fact that I'm a Longhorn fan as well.
Bite me. I was being generally sarcastic with my response. I knew you went there, but just found it odd that this was your second jab at UT fans in the last week or so.
In 1964, these 2 schools played a classic and Arkansas won 14-13. It was Texas's only loss that season while Arkansas finished undefeated; but this is a game that never gets the publicity that the '69 game gets. It is probably due to the fact that Arkansas didn't get the National Championship that year...instead it went to Alabama which lost in the Orange Bowl. It is a good thing that they don't decide who the National Champion is like that anymore (before the bowl games).
Do they not teach geography any more at the austin branch of UT? Crawford is near Waco, not near Fayetteville. It's maybe an hour closer to Arkansas than Austin is.
Funny you mention this. They were interviewing Tricky Dick at halftime, and the guy really knew his football. He was talking about both teams being undefeated and the game maybe deciding the National Championship. Then he said that he didn't want to insult the Penn State people because this was one of those years that Joe Pa lost out on a national championship after going undefeated. He said that College football may need a Super Bowl after all the other bowl. Looks like this is an argument for the ages.
For those of you that like to READ, there is a book about the 1969 game called, "Horns, Hogs, and Nixon". I for one haven't read it, but I hear it is a good read. Also, for those of you that are traveling to Fayetteville, game day traffic is horrible on the roads leading to Fayetteville. What is normally a 4 hour drive for me to Fayetteville, took about 5 and half hours the last game I went to. By the way, Go HOGS!!!
Sheer blasphemy from the hog callers! Blasphemy!! On a different college football subject, how would y'all like to be in Art Briles' shoes? Spanked by Rice one week, with the TD that UH scored making the final score look a lot closer than the game really was, and now having to travel to Norman to take on OU this week. Bad week for Art Briles to quit sniffing glue!
my wife is from little rock. her family went to arkansas. saturday night will be like a civil war in my house. the phone will not stop ringing. i took so much hell last season. the good news is...we asked my son last night who he'd be rooting for...and he made the hook 'em sign. I WIN AGAIN!!!!
Four hours from where? My plan is to go out bar hopping Friday night on Dickson St. in Fayetteville. Afterwards, get some shut eye back in Fort Smith. Wake up Saturday morning, and head back to Fayetteville, and drink till my liver hurts. Then kickoff is at 7:45PM. We've got seats in the Texas Section 111, Row 19.
candycane and I both live in Jonesboro which is in the northeast corner of Arkansas. It takes 4 hours to get to Fayetteville from here.
I think RMT graduated from UT before I was born This game means a lot to the older folks who actually remember watching Arkansas in the SWC. Since this will be the last time Texas Arkansas meet for awhile, it would suck to end the book with four straight losses.
