Is there an option on Gmail or hotmail that lets you know if the recipient has opened and read your email? Or a program? I sent an email to an old friend and I'm sure they've opened, but I haven't gotten a response in a while. kthx
there is definitely a way but I'm not sure how..I get emails sometimes that say the sender of this message wishes to be notified when you open this message etc.
I think they have that option when you're sending an e-card, but that's thru an external site.. and I don't wanna send an e-card. It's nosy I know, but it's good to know.
It's called a "read receipt" but this is only available on a system that supports it both on the sending and in the receiving, like Exchange. So, in short, it's not in GMail. Still, they can click "I don't want to send a read receipt" when they receive it, so you're not guaranteed. There is also something called "delivery receipt", and that is NOT available in gMail either. If you did NOT receive it back, that means their server (whether in their SPAM folder, SPAM quarantine, or Trash folder) received it. Sorry! did you understand this one?
Thanks Swoly, understood it, crystal clear. I guess it could be invasion of privacy. Sucks I can't know. Thanks tho!
Ummm... actually, no, it's not an invasion of privacy. It's that the peeps at GMail and the peeps at Hotmail or Yahoo! know this is a waste of time. The reader does NOT have to let you know, and programming something like this will actually work against email principles. Really, a "read receipt" only means that the receiving end accessed the email, not that the person "read" the message, you know? Outlook lets you view emails with the reading pane without marking them as READ, and I sometimes delete emails where the person requested a read receipt. I am a smart a$$ by nature, so when I delete and their inbox says: "SwoLy deleted your message entitled 'blah blah'", they call and say "Why didn't you read my message... the one about BLAH and BLAH?" I answer "Oh, yeah, you said BLAH BLAH means BLAH BLAH and we need to meeton Monday... right? Yeah, I read it. Why did you think I had not read it? " They looked puzzled. Don't sweat it, Yaozer. It's OK... they're not ignoring you... just not ANSWERING... although as humans, we need some sort of confirmation... I need that sometimes as well. Heck, this is a long post, and I didn't even want to continue it...
