The sockets on one wall in my house randomly loose power. Sometimes it could be when someone turns on a light in another room, other times it just drops power to all my devices without any intervention.

I have a computer, TV, and my router/modem all connected to the sockets on this wall. Any ideas why something like this would happen?

All the breakers are in the ON position, I turned them all off and back on just in case there was a loose breaker. I am stumped right now.

Anyone have a similar issue before?

Not entirely an answer for your intermittent electricity but look for a Ground Fault Interrupt reset on one or more of your plugs. Plugs are often wired through the same breaker and if the GFI trips in one room, you won't have electricity to the plugs in other rooms. Just test and reset any GFI's you find.

Again I don't think that's your answer but I had a GFI in a bathroom we don't use much that tripped and made a mystery about no power in other rooms.

If your GFCI tripped it wouldn't come back on with being reset, so I don't think that's the problem. Maybe a loose wire?

Overloaded circuit? Get one of those devices that test which "socket" is conntected to which breaker.

Bad socket? Cheap to switch out.

    Loose Wire?

Yes, I do have one GFI reset plug in the bathroom. When I pushed the reset button on it it just lit up for a bit. Didnt seem like anything was wrong with it. I still faced the issue after I pushed the reset on the one GFI I found.

Make sure that socket is not taped up.

Can you help me with a link of what one of those devices might look like?

Sounds like its shorting out. How long has this been happening? Have your hung anything on the wall recently or had somthing like trimming installed?

I installed an exterior light similar to this one. I guess it would be on the same wall that I am having issues on. However, I installed the light almost a year ago. [IMG]

Maybe go back and re-check your work. Make sure that none of the wire is exposed and that all connections are nice and tight. It's worth a shot, and if it solves your problem it could prevent you having to pay for an electrician to come out and locate where it's shorting out. (If that's what it is.)

And to test it first, you can turn off the power to the light outside and wait and see if the problem repeats while the power is shut off to the exterior light. With that light being motion activated, I'd imagine that the power switch for it is always turned on.

Yep, power is always on. The one I have isn't motion, its got a dusk/dawn switch, but yea.

I will try with the power off on the external light and see if there are any trips.

Stick a fork in the socket. If you live, then it isn't working

Check all connections 1st. 2nd, let me ask a question, how old is the house? Sometimes in older homes, they installed 2-way switches that controlled the power to certain circuits in a house. Sometimes it was a wall, or sometimes an entire room. Then go from there.

Probably about 10 years old. I don't think there are any switches controlling the power to this socket. Will go home and try.

From your description, it sounds like a loose or faulty socket.

Unless you are wanting to make an insurance claim, I would contact an electrician pretty quick ... unless you find another reason why its doing it.

Might as well ask this here...

Replacing bad bathroom light switch (stuck in OFF position), the whole thing actually has two switches, one is wired to the light fixture and another to an exhaust fan. 5 connections, including ground.

I got an identical combination switch and connected it the same way as the old one. The light turns on and off, but the fan just stays on. What would cause this? I'm 100% sure I didn't mix up the wires. I labeled them before starting. Could this just be a bad new switch?
