E-Readers

I bought my fiance a nook for her birthday back in March and have not regretted it. The reason I got it? Android. Because its back-end is Android-based, it gets frequent updates.

When I bought it, the PDF reader sucked. Now? It's great and made by Adobe.

When I bought it, it had no Internet browser. Now? It does. Browsing on an e-Ink product sucks in general, though.

The point is, the nook is constantly being upgraded without any additional purchase. Can someone with a Kindle say the same?

 

BTW, people get too bent out of shape with "touchscreen responsiveness" or speed of the e-Reader itself. To be honest, you won't be doing much with it other than reading books. The Internet browser and whatnot is merely for convenience and isn't a primary function of the device.

Once you open a book, the page flipping functionality is snappy and has no annoyances. That's all that should matter, IMO.

(not that the nook is bad at any of the other stuff)

 

If it's great at reading books, why would they care?

The PDF thing is nice, but like you said browsing sucks anyway. for most people reading books is the whole point in buying.


Ugh at the thought of any type of OS Warz crap creeping into freakin E-readers of all things.

Anyone know how DaDa's eyesight is? :grin:

 

I disagree. Most people that read novels read from beginning to end and they're done. Most people that read textbooks, manuals, or technical books will be flipping back and forth throughout their readings or when using the book as a reference. If the page flipping is slow, this could get annoying fast (unless the slowness is being exaggerated by people or there are alternative ways of going back and forth).

^ I've decided to hold off on buying an e-reader until color E-Ink displays become standard.

 

I will be testing this out this semester in school... I figure I will just "go to" the pages I want... or use the Table of Contents.

 

*sniffle* it's like they're answering my prayers... I don't want to lose all my points on my credit card, so I'm tempted to just use them on an e-reader now. Or at least by Christmas. We'll see what's out buy then. The DX Graphite I want is overpriced in comparison to the new Kindles. That needs to change as well.

 

How slow is flipping back 5 pages and forward 5 pages, for example? Laggy? I should've tried this out when I had the chance on a co-worker's Kindle.

 

I don't think you'll see color e-ink in any of the major players any time soon, certainly not this year.

 

I would also venture to say that the price of color E-ink readers will be in the same range that readers used to be when they first became popular a few years ago. Probably 300$ I would guess.

 

Not too bad actually. I just click the five times and it takes a second to load.

I like that I can take notes as I'm reading though... then I can just click straight to what I want without the flipping.

 

That was kind of my point. The page flipping on all of the devices are similarly quick and any delay is either non-existent or negligible. Thus, they all probably do their job just fine, you just have to decide what size of a screen you want really. I was simply fond of the nook because of the software update potential -- I am not sure if the Kindle has the same.

Yah the Kindle has an update feature. It recently got Facebook and Twitter integration... not sure why anyone would use that though.

From my experiences on the kindle 2, page flipping is a bit laggy. It's not bad if you are reading from beginning to end, but it's noticeable if you're trying to flip through several pages searching for something in particular.

Then there is the page number issue. There aren't true page numbers but rather a percentage complete or some cryptic reference number. Is there a way to overcome that?

Well, i've been looking at these, especially at the right price...I'd to get one that has full intenet browsing w/o the sticker shock...I've found theses:

1) Augen

2) Sharper Image Literati

3) Nook

Someone mentioned the kindle you can do facebook, which is all my daughter would care about...Anyone have one of the above?

Any one have one, can recommend one? I'd don't want to spend more than $130, which I know is not that much, but I'm a cheap azz...

 

Of the e-readers I've tried out, I like the Sony ones the best. The page turns are quicker and they are all touchscreen now.

Don't get too caught up in the wifi and 3g stuff on e-readers. Navigating book stores on those things is a pain in the ass.
