I don't seeing tablet killing off e-readers anytime soon. Easy on the eyes, cheaper, simple, smaller, lighter and superior battery life.
I have a Kindle 2 and love it. I seldom use the wireless feature to connect to amazon, but I do use it to go to mobile sites to check scores, movie times etc.
I'm still on the fence about this. I have enough "points" on my credit card to possibly get the new Kindle DX Graphite for dang-near free. My only issue is that I would use it mainly for technical books and I flip back and forth all over the place through those sometimes. I don't like page turning delays. The only other negative I can think of right now is that I wish these thinks could go from e-Ink to color somehow. lol. I would subscribe to magazines maybe on them, but magazines are better to read in color to me.
Sounds like you'd be better off with a tablet of some sort. Especially if your main use is color manuals and magazines.
Maybe 2 seconds or so to change pages (think of how long it takes to turn a page). The touchscreen will fall asleep when you don't touch it for awhile and sometimes you will have to tap it a few times to wake it up. I only use the touchscreen to get to my next book once I'm finished reading my current book. You should go down to a B&N and check the nook out.
The 'eye strain' stuff is a little overblown, unless you guys are really struggling to post on Clutchfans right now. To me, the direct sunlight thing us much more important and has a greater impact. Plus I think it probably helps to make the transition to digital when it looks just like a printed page. In any case, I haven't heard that the little touchscreen on a Nook is really utilized all that much, but it certainly looks nice.
I can probably get away with reading magazines in grey-scale/e-Ink, but I'd rather have color. I'm looking at tablets now, but none have the value I'd want in one at the moment. These e-readers and tablets are all in their infancy, so I'm willing to wait it out a bit, I suppose. I don't think I'd get a ton of eye strain with a tablet, but most of them won't be light like a dedicated e-reader, have the charge lifespan of an e-reader, or be as easy to read outside (more than likely). Plus they're way more expensive and I probably wouldn't get any bang-for-the-buck out of tablets at the moment.
BTW, if any of you are on the fence about e-readers and want to research, this is a pretty good forum with a pretty big representation of users for several e-readers : http://www.mobileread.com/ Lots of reviews and opinions on there.
inconvenient? Anyway... I was wondering... why are the prices still REALLY EFFIN' HIGH for most of these books I can buy for almost the same amount?
Europe for 2 weeks? Dragging around multiple books doesnt sound like fun. Plus, you can rent e-books from the library
^ Yeap. I've been researching. You can compare the "Kindle" price to the "hardback" and "paperback" prices. They don't look very different. If anything, there is about a one to three dollar difference between them.
The eye strain is not at all overblown. Reading a forum briefly versus reading a book is completely different. I have a Kindle and I've owned an iPad and I can tell you that there is a huge difference when you read for an extended amount of time.
How many times are you going to see walls of text on CF? How long would you be willing to read consecutive 20 line paragraphs on CF? Message boards are obviously different than reading. Posts aren't more than a few lines and then new thread, new page, or new topic. It's not immersive, syntax is an afterthought, spelling isn't a concern.
