Whitsett is the one that should have been fired. He f*cked up that team, not Dunleavy. People forget that Dunleavy was the C.O.Y in 1999. This pisses me off.

However, if Clyde replaces him, I will feel better about it.

If Clyde replaces him, he'll just be the next victim unless they get some new players.

It was Whitsitt's deals that backfired, but that doesn't make Dunleavy a good coach.

Of course, Whitsitt was the guy who hired Dunleavy, too, so the blame ultimately goes back to him.

Nevertheless, I don't know if I'd fire Whitsitt if I owned the Blazers. He's still 1 of perhaps only 3 GMs who can say they built two separate contending teams (Seattle in the mid-90s and Portland last year; Jerry West and maybe Don Nelson are the only other ones I can think of).

Who's available that would do a better job?

Anyone else think Pat Riley may be making a long trip from Liam i to Portland?

I'm not sure about Riley to Portland but if he were to go there I'd expect MAJOR changes to Portlands team. IMHO, Wells and Wallace (and maybe Stoudamire) would be the only untouchables.

Portland has some very large problems not the least of which is replace or find a quality backup for an aging Sabonis.

Not sure the Portland implosion was all Dunleavy's fault. Maybe they did Dunleavy a favor. The Cavs have a better cap situation, some draft picks, an interested owner, and they play in the East.

That just shows how stupid Whitsitt is, he had his future big man in J. O'neal and he traded him for an old Dale Davis...

Stoudamire definitely isn't an untouchable. Portland has been trying to dump him for the last 2 years. I think that the Blazers will be going hard and heavy after Gary Payton. I can see them throwing a package of Stoudamire, Dale Davis, and maybe an extra player or a pick for Payton and Vin Baker. In fact I can see Portland trying to send Davis, Stoudamire and Bonzi Wells to Portland for Payton and Baker, and then trying to sign Allan Houston.

Coaching's a tough gig. Don Chaney was fired half a season after winning coach of the year - the Rockets didn't even give him a full year to turn it around! And Chaney is still waiting to get another head coaching job. Dunleavy's the coach of a team that went to the WCF last year. They can't get rid of every player, so the coach gets the axe instead.

Portland is really screwed cap-wise, because they owe tons of money to guys like Kemp and Pippen, who are virtually untradeable. And their centerpiece players like Wallace and Wells aren't stable enough to lead that team back to prominance.

I am going to make a prediction and say they hire Ainge as head coach!

And I'm going to make a prediction that Danny Ainge won't touch that job with a 10-foot pole! If he quit Phoenix because of stress. . . [IMG] Magic Johnson said he is interested in coaching again, I can see Portland showing some interest in him figuring he would garner respect and have them focused.

Clyde ad coach of Portland?! That's most hilarious thing I've heard all week.

I love Clyde as a player but as a coach?! I think not!

Here is a guy who had the worst tenure in Cougar history. Not to mention that he bailed on his team.

Clyde is too mild-mannered to handle the players on that team. Just because his jersey is hanging from the rafters in Portland doesn't make any difference to those players.

I feel bad for whoever takes this team.

I also don't see Riles bailing on Miami. He's got all the power there plus he owns a small part of the team, if I am not mistaken.

they need somebody to tell them that they're ****-ups. I think the only unemployed coach that could do it is Coach Thompson.

    Achebe,

It doesn't matter who goes in there and tells them they are the problem because Kemp and Pippen are well past their prime years and Portland is stuck with them.

Dunleavy should not be blamed for what's wrong with that team.

Dunleavy sucks and should have been fired after last year.

Who would blame Whitsitt for dealing Jermaine O'Neal and Grant? Grant did not want to play in Portland, and didn't start. What was supposed to happen? Would you rather trade Wallace, a younger player with less of a history of injury and who's more of a go-to guy? Getting Shawn Kemp for Grant was an amazing move. How was Jermaine O'Neal going to help win Portland a title anytime soon? He was 3rd string. Dunleavy is not a good coach. That's the bottom line.

Remove Dunleavy from the bench, fine. But the NBA should pay him $3M a year just to walk up and down the court grinning at Rick Fox while hissing a string of filth about Fox's mother -- a public service which Dunleavy performed with great aplomb in last year's conference finals.
