This is easily the most 'futuristic' city in the world. It's mind-boggling how many 'freakish' projects they've taken on over the years, and they're promising more to come. I would kill for this view, all from the comfort of my own home... <object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/urq39ahvaaE"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/urq39ahvaaE" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Geez Dubai is awesome in it's innovativeness but how often do you hear people reply "I want to go to Dubai" there always saying "England,France,Scotland,Japan". BTW Dubai has those man-made islands too right? What would be even cooler is if you could manuelling rotate your room with a button inside your room, that way you can have whatever view YOU want, and also so you don't get dizzy.
Only 90 people will work on that. Amazing. It's been years since I've been to Dubai. I need to make another trip.
Hahah be careful when you say that or else you'll turn this into a D&D or someone might start a fight. Dubai looks too expensive and just wayyyy too much going on. They're always trying to one up themselves and the world. I predict the first flying car is gonna be made in Dubai.
You know what's even cooler than that? They've already started work on that in Abu Dhabi, lol. Your own villa which rotates to whichever side you want. Each corner of the "village" that this villa is in looks different. As I understand it will be ready in 2012 and each one will cost around $6M-$8M. There will only be 15 of these. Yes, the man-made islands are in Dubai. No, we don't have terrorists here. redefined, If you haven't been here in over 4 years, then you don't even know Dubai.
eh, Dubai is too expensive. I prefer BAHRAIN! obviously nothing like Dubai...of course nothing is. But Bahrain is so underrated.
Sheesh, this BBS has way too many threads about Dubai. Who gives a ****? It's a worthless, ugly piece of crap whose soul saving grace is that a bunch of dinosaurs crapped there a million years ago and provided them with some natural resources beneath the ground. A bunch of impressive but socially insignificant architectural projects aren't going to help much once the oil runs out.
Really? Last I checked Dubai has started a HUGE tourism industry, and made it a place to visit/see/live for people in the region. IIRC, they did all this because they knew oil wasn't going to last forever.
Really, how many people want to go to Dubai on a holiday? It's become kind of a niche subject here on this BBS, but seriously. Apart from a few contrived, spectacular architectural developments, what appeal does it have?
that's like me saying whats the point of visiting Italy? Most people go for the Coliseum, or the Vatican, or Pompeii. They are all structures (I mean they are about structures/art), it's amazing what Dubai has been doing architectural wise / structurally. They are revolutionizing the standards for building. Light years in front of the rest of the world on growing/developing. Like i said, it mainly appeals to people in the region, or people who visit the area because of business trips etc. You won't find an average person in America who will say I want to go to Dubai because most are dumb enough to think it's full or terrorists....all they see is what's portrayed in the media from Iraq. As for going there, I will admit it's not in the top of my list of places to vist again...but that's not the point. These threads are started to share the things that Dubai is accomplishing, stuff NO ONE else in the world is. /end drunken rant.
I don't think Dubai is a beautiful city. I wouldn't go there for the architecture either, and I can do shopping elsewhere. However, they do have great weather when it's cold in Europe...and good hotel infrastructure. Plus, it is not that far from Europe and flights can be had for reasonable prices.
Good post. I want to add that Dubai is a place to live more than it is to visit. You can be whoever you want to be and do whatever you want to do in Dubai. That's the most appealing thing to me. I would also like to add that Dubai's non-oil revenue is somewhere between 5 and 10% now. That's down from over 50% just 15 years ago. The oil is in Abu Dhabi. Dubai is 5 years away from not needing another drop of oil, and expectations are that the oil will definitely last longer than 5 years.
60 minutes did a segment on the city and it's founders. You can go over to their website and check it out while it is still up. I really didn't know much about Dubai before watching 60 minutes this weekend. It really seems to be set up to become a major player in the world in a very short amount of time. http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/60minutes/main3415.shtml
Ive never seen so many Dubai threads in my life. The BBS has an enormous Dubai hard-on apparently. It looks like a cool city, but lets give some lovin' to Tripoli, Libya!! Now thats a city!!
don't forget bigger and better schools.. i think they are working on building a multi-billion dollar university .. or so thats what my friend said his company was working on. i would love to go sight-seeing there.. don't know too much about the weather though since Roger Federer practice outdoors in dubai in 100+ degrees
