Get yourself a kit. Sit down and practice to the music you like, trying to copy it. It will help with timing. Also, guitar center has some pretty good videos... although I never used them, they looked good.

Try finding somone at school that plays too. Personal pointers on rimshot, practicing timing and drumroll tips helped me out greatly.

But the best advice is get as much time on the throne as possible. Live behind the kit, and you will be one with your sticks.

You can get a pretty good Pearl Export Series for under $500 plus cymbals, around $800 for a solid starter set up.

After all these years (of doing classical and marching and every other kind of percussion), I still need to learn how to play set. I'm sure I just need to practice, and I can probably afford the kit. The only problem is...

where do you put it? I'm afraid it will drive everyone crazy. But you guys probably don't have soundproof practice rooms in your houses...

You can get pads for your drums so they aren't quite so loud.

Cymbals, on the other hand, I'm not quite sure how you can deaden those.

They also have "silent" cymbals. They look and feel just like the real things but they are totally silent. Bands used to use them for those cheesy dance shows when they were required to lip sync and air guitar everything.

Unfortunately, I had to give up teaching a few years ago. Even though I loved it, I just don't have the time anymore. :(

I know a guy who specializes in teaching "20-something" beginners. If you have your email option turned on, I'll email you his name and # this weekend.

    You're in Houston, right?
