Ok so I bought a 1994 Ford Probe that's a manual. my dad knows how to drive manual and told me if I was sure on buying a car that i dont know how to drive. I said yea i'll learn. apparently its not that easy and im starting to 2nd guess myself. If anyone would like to post personal experiences driving manual please do so.
Its not easy for the first couple of weeks you drive it, if you are only used to automatic. But after a couple weeks, its like riding a bike.
I never learned how to drive a manual transmission, but tried once and stalled out all over the place. Just keep practicing and you'll get it. At least you don't have to worry about screwing up the transmission of an expensive car.
Dude, It's like riding a bike. You fall and get back on. Once you learn you never forget. Or is it - Once you hit someone then they get back on their bike and pedal very fast away from you? I'm sure an elephants in their somewhere.
Once you get first gear down, it's easy. Like MEOWGI said, just go to a parking lot at night and practice getting into 1st, 2nd, 3rd and also practice reverse. The first day or two are really fustrating. You'll probably be driving fine in about a week.
Ya, my first car was an 89 Probe and manual. Had no clue how to drive it. Within 2 weeks I had taught myself how to operate it. Just think of all the ass you'll be getting in the backseat and use that as motivation.
I used to drive a manual transmission a while back, I just bought the car and drove it for about four years. But I think I must have forgot how to drive one becuase I tried one last year and I keep stalling all over the place.
All of the cars we have had in the past 10 years have been manuals. Once you can get into first gear, you're gold.
LOL.. this thread got me thinking.. When I was little my dad got a new truck and I wanted to drive it so at the ripe old age of 9 he let me learn to drive...He let me drive around the burbs in his lap of the new truck.. so that's how I learned to drive a stick.. THANKS DAD, I could have killed us or someone else for your great parenting..
Try to focus on only first gear and then slowly move to 2nd gear and so on. ONce you get 1st gear down it's a complete breeze. One thing you might want to try is just work with the clutch. Press it all the way in and slowly let it out until you feel the car moving. Once it's moving hold it there. That's called riding the clutch. NOt always a good thing but this helps for you to find the engagement point for your clutch. ONce you learn this point by heart it will be easy to get on the gas and SLOWLY let out your clutch. The smoother your clutchwork the smoother your transitions to each gear will be. When starting out you DO NOT want to just fully release the clutch out or pop it. Always be smooth and gentle with it and it'll be nice and gentle back to you.
i drove my manual transmission vehicle home without any previous experience...but i did stall a bit in my first week or so. after that, it's a breeze. oh...and first gear is to the left...not straight up - as i had to explain to a friend last week who couldn't figure out why he didn't have to shift until 70 km/hr.
I tried to have my dad teach me but it just drove me crazy. Him just yelling everytime i stalled and that was every 5 seconds.I just took the car out by myself and just kept trying until I got it on my own. Not too bad once you get it and once you learn you wont forget. I prefer driving manual over automatic now.
I don't drive MANUAL transmission. I never learned and probably never will. Besides, I need my other hand for... er... ummm... uuuuhhhh... other things...
One thing I learned about manual is try not to step on the clutch when you don't need to, I had a bad habit of stepping on the clutch while at stoplights waiting for the green, just so I can be ready to go into 1rst gear. Later I found out it wears the clutch out sooner. Although I know how to drive stick, I prefer AT...frees me up to eat, drink, fidget with the radio, etc.
well i just came back from driving stick. overall i think i did well. i honestly didnt think i would do that good. my dad said i just need to work on reverse a little more. as for stalling goes I only did it 3 times. oh yea i learned not shift on 3rd gear while on a parking lot lol. my biggest fear is of the rollback while waiting for a green light at a hill. but i guess thats for later.
question: If you try to learn how to drive manual by your own, and stall a lot because of it. Will it do a lot of damage to the transmission system?
My question is that if I get a manual transmission car, how do I get it safely to home in the first place?? Cuz I am actually interested in getting a mt car, but I never driven one before, and I am not sure if I can get it safely to home or to places to practice...
