"Coach Adelman is very calm and he completely trusts his players"

I heared this during the Spurs game last Tuesday. Surely he was trying to compare ( implied ) RA to Jeff who is exactly the opposite of what he mentioned, always coaching, yelling and that is obviously not a sign of trust.

    Jeff, what say you?

without more context it seems he's just making an observation about RA.

its possible to do that without any slight to JVG.

It is obvious that RA doesn't call timeouts the way JVG did. There were several times in the Lakers game where I thought, "OK, TO now," because JVG would have definitely called one, but RA let them play on. I was mildly shocked.

Coming from Clyde, it probably means Adelman doesn't mind his highest-paid player showing up five minutes before game time.

Was this comment after Bill cracked the joke that people with courtside seats should be happy with the coaching change because RA sits for a lot of the game unlike JVG?

Drexler rides Adleman's balls pretty much every game.

Don't see how that statement by itself is a slight against anyone, more like just a statement of Clydes opinion about a coach he played for.

I agree. Clyde doesn't say flat out anything negative, and I appreciate that b/c I really like JVG, and IMO it would be bad form to dig on the old coach, particularly when he won 50+ games last year for us.

    But...
Clyde, [and for that matter, Bullard], they both IMO really like RA, and they emphasize how much they like RA in a way that suggests to me that they weren't big fans of JVG's coaching style.

Myself, I loved JVG - really loved his personality, his humor, loved watching how he created such a strong defensive scheme, how he tried to control the tempo and make use of every possession - quite meticulously.

Clyde and Bullard, talk about (1) how wonderful it would be to play for RA and how much his players love him, in a way that implies that JVG's system wasn't such a joy -- which makes sense to me -- JVG's system seemed more regimented for sure. And also Drexler said something a game or so ago, about how he thought that (2) OFFENSE wins games. Clearly, JVG's system is based on the opposite premise, that "defense wins games". I remember a homeless guy who used to show up at the park when weused to play pick up games - he would say over and over again "defense wins games"... "if you wanna win the game you gotta play the defense"... he was fun.

Anyhow, we definitely have the best of both worlds.
Our team still has,or appears to have good defensive intensity, and an amped up more free flowing offense. As RA said, its really unclear at this point whether its the offense that is better, or just our superstar play, i.e. TMac is tearing it up so far this year. And of course we have Mike James and Scola, both of who can produce off the bench and make our team look better offensively. And the real difference between JVG and RA seems to be the use of Bonzi. I've been real impressed with Bonzi who seems to be a great team player, does a good job of getting the ball to Yao, plays good D, rebounds etc... [glad Bonzi likes RA and that he is ready to play this year and that he got the chance et cetera.]

Love RA, and respect to JVG.

That's because we had no timeouts left!

    Drexler also said:

"Coach Adleman is a seasoned veteran who brings it night-in and night-out, a consumate professional who just makes everyone around him better. Nothing but net, coach!"

I think the reference was about RA sitting all the time while JVG was up walking around all the time grilling the refs and yelling plays to the guys.

Drexler had a bad taste of this when he played for Mike Schuler in Portland, the coach right before Adelman. Of course, Drexler was known for not going at it all-out in practice, and he readily admits that in his book. But Schuler, unlike Jack Ramsay who knew how to balance discipline with a calm approach, was all yell, and eventually he was out. Adelman is always well-liked by his players- sometimes, that can be a bad thing, but as Joe Torre, Tony Dungy, K.C. Jones, and Phil Jackson have proven, you can certainly win a championship with this type of coach.

    Ditto. I loved the guy.

He did a lot with so little.

Drexler is full of good words for RA.
I remember saying him that even when we looked for a new coach.

I'm pretty sure Adelman has been doing that in the last couple of guys at least.

i loved JVG, he played ball the way i love it being played. that being said, if adelman can get us out of the first round i'll love him forever. if not then the hiring is a failure in my eyes. harsh, but who cares if theres a new offense if the result is the same.
