Our system didn't fit his skills and Pippen b****ed his way out of here (although everything that he said about Charles was true). Clyde said similar things and everyone rejoiced but when Pip said it....................... This was my quote from a previous thread and it go me wondering. Why was it OK for Clyde to say that Chuck was lazy amongst other things but when Pip said those same things he was burned at the stake? Was Pip lying? Is it because of Clyde's Sterling background (pun intended)? I've never been much of a Charles fan myself and to see two Top 50 players with jewelry say those things have to make you question whether Chuck indeed lacked the dedication to win it all. Either way, Pip is a punk but not because he called Charles out IMHO. Now back on topic, WHY THE DOUBLE STANDARD????
I wasn't exactly happy when Clyde said that stuff. I think he quit too soon. Can you imagine Hakeem, Barkley, Pippen and Clyde playing together? I thought he quit on that team. The difference in the forgiveness is that Clyde won for us, then quit. Pippen cried, insulted, made the playoffs, lost, then cried a little more, then quit. In other words, Pippen never did a thing for us. I wouldn't call that a double standard.
Barkley was done wrong by Pip. Barkley took WAY less money to stay and play with Pip and his whining self, I feel thats where it is different!
I've always liked Clyde and when he stopped calling everything "phenomonal" and spoke what he felt was true about Chuck I believed him. I'd always been indifferent to Pip and when he continued his b**** session and spoke what he felt was true about Chuck I believed him also. It seems that most everyone else just blasted Scottie to no end while giving Clyde a free pass for saying the same thing.
pippen dribbled off his foot to end a playoff game...and then blamed the loss on barkley in the locker room immediately after the game. classless.
Scottie Pippen is a whiner, quitter and a b****. Everywhere he's been he's whined and moaned and had a negative force on the lockerroom. He took himself out of a close game in Chicago with bare seconds on the clock because the coach drew up the last second shot for someone else, and not him. So he stormed off in a hissy fit to the end of the bench. Meanwhile, the shot went in. That is Scottie Pippen's Legacy in the NBA. That is the defining moment of a loser.
Yes he did but don't think that he didn't have his reasons also. He knew that he only had a season or two left and was willing to do all within reason to squeeze a title out of his career. I'm no mindreader but I doubt if he would have done something that drastic if he still had many a season in front of him. Just my opinion.
OK, let's see whether I have the pulse of this discussion down. Basically, what the forum is saying is that Pip is despised because 1. He called out someone who had sacrificed money to get him in 2. He never managed to win a ring in Houston 3. He dribbled off his foot and still blamed the loss on Barkley. OK, discounting the social courtesy side of things, I must then say I do sympathise with Pip. Just to play the devil's advocate, let's see: 1. Nothing is being said about the fact that what he said might actually be the truth. Let's face it, Barkley has never been the type to truly maximize his potential. He cruises with his talent. Coming from the type of winning environment Pip is used to, imagine how frustrating this must have been. Dedication to winning is not simply putting in the time and getting the numbers on the court. It involves dedicating yourself to the cause outside the court and living the lifestyle which is conducive to winning on a consistent basis. Barkley has NEVER shown this type of dedication. BUT he is a charming talker, the anti Pip, who's ugly as heck and scowls half the time. Which is perhaps a big reason why Pip is so despised. 2. Not winning a ring can hardly be put on Pip's shoulders. Anyone who would say that the Rocks of 1995 were dominating is self delusional. It resembled more a team on its final legs and gritted its teeth to a championship that its stars felt probably represented their last chance at a ring. Bottom line, when Pip came in, the other vets were going downhill and he came into a situation which was entirely unconducive to the smooth flowing passing type game he was used to in Chicago. 3. A game is NEVER lost in the last minute. It is the little things throughout the game which determine the result. Check out the game Pip was talking about. Check out the defensive assignments Chuck missed. See the times he didn't bother to box out. Note his defensive stance. I'm not defending Pip actions. I'm not even a fan of his. There is NO justification for publicly calling out a team mate. None. I just think it's ridiculous to keep whacking him when there's no real reason to while defending Chuck. I love watching Chuck, but really, his dedication to the game has always been questionable.
Everything Pip said about Charles was true! It wasn't that which turned us against him it was that he said so many disgraceful things about Houston, the Rockets and Rudy T. All of this was his opt out because he found that HE was not the same great player as when he played with the Bulls. We the fans and the Rox team were expecting greatness and he was not the same player any more! In his personal shame, he use as many critical excuses as he could to get himself out of here. Regarding Drexler he should of stayed a couple of years and Barkley should have moved on! I feel sure that Pippin, Drexler and Hakeem would all have played much better for thoes extra two years.
Hmm... interesting pt Yetti. Pip, Clyde and Dream. That'd be interesting. I had always thought Clyde chose to retire at the right time. His FG % was starting to reflect his age. It was harder and harder for him to get off gd shots. But perhaps with Pip, the quicker playing style might have done him good. Would have been interesting to watch, that's for sure.
So the Pip venom is not quite as poisonous as I thought. There are some rational minds out there. Who'd a thunk it?
77, Great points. SP said things that were dead on. Everyone focused on the CB comments, but ignored the Rudy comments. Like it was mentioned, SP was use to structure and discipline. He found Rudy's ship lacking. Everyone said SP was washed up. Funny how 8 years Later, SP's Blazers have won 9 of the last 10. Rudy is the only coach to have 3 Top 50 Players and not win a ring. He did it twice. SP wanted to go to the Lakers, because Phil knows what he is doing. Phil wanted SP with him even though SP sat out 1.9! Charles played the fall guy. SP intended target was Rudy!
Any respect I had for Scottie Pippen died the day he abandoned his teammates in Chicago with 1.7 seconds left. Nothing he's done afterward has improved my regard for him.
Do you remember the whole incident? Pippen called out the whole team. He went on TV and specifically targetted Barkley and also talked about the Dream. I remember both Barkley and Dream on TV replying to what was said. He called out Barkely which can be understood but he also called the rest of the team out. What are you going to do, keep Pippen or the team. Clyde never called out the team, plus Clyde is like a local hero. Any thing he says can be more easily forgiven.
Pippen did it in public to get an exit. Drexler exited and then said it. It caused major havoc to the team when Pippen said all that crap. Drexler didn't hurt the team. It's all about the team. Thats why I hate Pip.
When Pippen talked, he called out the team to force his trade, his choice of words were meant to insult and the entire reason was to force a trade out of Houston so he could go to a contender. Clyde talked after he won for was, retired on his own terms, didn't make it (or intend to make it) a big deal (unlike pippen). And his words was more of admonishing the current team than trying to force something. That to me was the diffrence.
no, pippen was used to 'michael' and 'jordan'. Everyone said SP was washed up. Funny how 8 years Later, SP's Blazers have won 9 of the last 10. last time i checked, it wasn't pippen's leadership. it's was more like bonzi wells, derek anderson, and wallace stepping up. SP wanted to go to the Lakers, because Phil knows what he is doing. Phil wanted SP with him even though SP sat out 1.9 he wanted to go there b/c he knew he could hide behind kobe and shaq's shadows. and if they got him and won the championship, pippen would look better. aint' about what phil knows, it's about what pippen wants to hide. and phil wanted him b/c he knew how to run the triangle. the triangle is one of the hardest strategies to run and pippen knew the triangle well. if it wasn't for that, jackson had no use of him. ex. horace grant, all of 39 years old, might come back to the lakers just b/c he knows the triangle DESPITE the fact that he and jackson don't like one another.
