All this stuff in this thread about Mars colonization made me think of Blade Runner. In the book the earth is totally hosed from pollution - they pay people to go live on the hell-hole of Mars to ease the burden on the already-destroyed planet. Happy thoughts.
the mayan calendar ends on 12/21/2012 (the mayans were pretty advanced in mathematics, developed the idea of the number zero and calculus... all this w/o a calculator ) but who knows, maybe they ran out of stone or they forgot to carry the 1.
why is mars so appealing? i hate hot weather as is. and if something the size of texas do pass us by, it'll most likely swing the moon away from us, or even hitting us. maybe even changing our distance from the sun all theory though
I have never heard that the mayans developed the idea of calculus - that's interesting. I always thought it was Archimedes and then Newton and Leibniz formalized it to an actual branch of mathematics.
That would be so awesome! Personally, I've felt that America is about due for another great depression pretty soon. I don't know about you, but I'm ready to dig some ditches!
But you can control your survival. Building a bunker underneath your garage, for example. Spending couple hours every Saturday morning with a shovel... it's doable.
