Alright, I want to PUNCH bill gates again.

Turns out you can prevent Windows from showing an extension for an executable and it can launch a freaking SHELL command on your harddrive! Something that looks like a .txt file or anything is not really.

this is the .hta extension for HTML Application that can launch ActiveX scripts.

Oh, Bill, save me from those ugly file extensions. I don't want to see the .hta ... oooh. thanks, may have another...

    ---------------------------------
    security advisory is here
    http://www.guninski.com/clsidext.html

it has a test file that will launch a harmless shell command, just to show you.
    ---------------------------------

You can just use Details view in all folders and HTML Application will be displayed in the file type column. If you want to just stop these files from running,

    this is what I did...

In any Windows folder, go to Tools | Folder Options | File Type | HTA

Hit "Advanced" and check the box "Always show extensions"

Guess what....that does not work. This really pisses me off. I want to punch him. So, I changed the damn "Actions". Select the Open action and change it to something harmless like "View". Then make a new "Open" action and set that to NOTEPAD.EXE. that works.

This makes all .hta files open into Notepad rather than execute. Screw those files.

    bastards!!!
