I still have a megaphone from the Dome french fries with "ASTRODOME - EIGHTH WONDER OF THE WORLD" on it.
LOL. I remember the "coldest foam in the dome" dude, too. I remember nickel beer nights and my dad almost taking a header from the yellow seats as a result. He got so "nickeled out" he couldn't remember where we parked and we had to wait for the lot to empty. Man, mem-o-ries! Saw the 21+ inning Mets game on Cub Scout night as a kid.
This is a bit off, but has anyone thought about how the Astros have now worn the current uniforms for longer than the last Dome ones? It crossed my mind the other day and I realized that '00-'05 has been longer than '94(shortened)-'99. Damn Enron/Astros/MMP is ooooooold. They'll be talking about a new ballpark in a couple of year. I guess my favorite memories would be running the field after a game, going to the Rodeos, and being at the Oilers game against the Chargers that never was because of the nice field-long elevated bump along the field. Oh, and dozens of the Astros games of course.
Yep, the Dome was awesome every time I went. Even when my high school football team lost the state championship game there. We were trying to repeat and lost by four points. I've never been to Minute Maid park and have no desire to. I don't like any new stadiums, they should keep all the old ones. In fact, I don't like most new stuff period. In my day, stuff was garish and cheesy and ridiculous, and WE LIKED IT! sincerely, Grumpy Old Man
That was great, wish they would do something like that today. But I remember being able to actually go on the field to listen to the players give clinics. I can still remember Bob Watson talking about hitting...
Lots & lots. Luv Ya Blue - was just a wee lad, so no real specific memories, just insane noise & a sea of columbia blue. 1986 - the ASG, no hitter & playoffs, especially game 6. I cried. 1993 - Joe ****ing Montana. 1997 - heckling Dante Bichette from Lefty's Pub. Having Dante Bichette come over to the fence & heckle us back. 1997 - the division clincher. We were in Lefty's Pub getting obliterated, ready for the party. As soon as the game was over, we scaled the chain link fence & made a bee-line for the mound. Someone, somehow, had a few bottles of champagne out on the field, quickly got soaked. Ran around, hugging random strangers, had a couple of cigars for the occasion, ran the bases & did an awesome head-first slide into home. Filled my pocket with dirt from the mound, still have a shotglass full of it. 1998 - saw every one of The Unit's home starts. The vibe in that place is something I hadn't seen since the Oilers in the House of Pain era. Was so convinced that was "our year". **** Kevin Brown. And Leyritz. 1999 - the division clincher in the season (and Dome) finale. Watching Bags, Bidge & Hampton ride around the dome on Harley's, drinking champagne & smoking stogies. Was at the playoffs as well. **** Walt Weiss.
Some random memories: watching Oilers trounce the Super Bowl Champ Redskins on a MNF game; the 97 division championship; the super long game against the Dodgers...left in about the 14th inning i think; going to games in high school with friends...paying $4 for mezzanine seats and splitting parking...heckling Andy Van Slyke and him lobbing the bird at us; last Oilers game ever ..that was like a funeral; last game of 94 before strike; last regular season astros game in 99...division clincher...like buck said, watching the players ride harleys around the field. it's so weird to go to texans games and see that big building just sitting there..doing nothing. i point it out to my 5 year old son...and always come to the odd realization that after all the sporting events i've been to with him, he's never set foot inside the Astrodome. that's just really weird to me.
I was at that game. The best game i've been fortunate to witness in person. Being one of thousands running around the Astrodome turf when the game was over was icing on the cake.
Damn Burk you went to a bunch of classic games. Scott's no hitter was a classic. Montana in 93 pulling off the road upset. I think it was his last playoff win and the last playoff game in the Dome. 98 Brown might have had the best pitching performance in playoff history. 99 one of the best playoff games ever. Euseibio (sp?) robbed by Weiss as he throws out Caminiti at home. Pretty good list.
I have a lot of Dome memories....a lot of them included the Rodeo. I attended (but don't remember..I was like two years old) Elvis Presley, Donny and Marie, Sonny and Cher. As for the Astros: - I remember going to a double header in 1979 and George Foster hit two *long* home runs for the Reds. Nobody hit home runs back then, much less two. -Another Reds memory, at another game my drunk stepfather heckled Johnny Bench mercilessly...he was glaring at us from the field. What a classy guy my mother's husband was...he wrecked the car in the parking lot on the way out of that game. Niiiice. -Saw game five of the 1980's NLCS against the Phillies. What a great game..very disappointed at the ending, of course. The atmosphere was electrifying. Art Howe's name was chanted..that's how pumped up the crowd was! -Saw Jose Cruz hit a game winning homer against the St. Louis Cards in 1986..I think the contest was on the NBC Game of the Week..I saw Bob Costas scurrying around that day. -Saw Mike Scott strike out 10 Dodgers and shut them out in 1986. He was awesome. -Saw one of Nolan Ryan's worst games...got shelled by the Pirates and made two base throwing error. -I remember seeing Gerald Young steal three bases and think he was the next big thing. -Daryle Ward's homer in the last regular season game in the Astrodome against the Reds. Football- For some reason just about every Oilers game I went to sucked. The Brown's smoked a Jerry Glanville team 40-0 and the Steelers won a playoff game with a Gary Anderson kick in overtime. I think I loved the Oilers more than anything and they pretty much tortured me for over twenty years.
