So I saw Scary Movie 4 at the Dollar Theatre today. It actually costs $1.50 now. At one time, Dollar Theatre was a hot thing in the Clear Lake area, people had to wait in lines for movies like Eddie and Rookie of th Year, it was crazy. But now, it gets a small population. It is definitely worth the value, $1.50 is cheaper than rental. My question is this: how do they manage to pay for workers and costs with a few people who pay $1.50 to watch? It doesn't seem to add up, it's not like THAT many people come anymore.
In general movie theaters don't make that much money at the box office. A pretty big percentage goes back to the studio. It's the concession stands with its enormous markup that pays for everything. And advertising. Dollar theaters usually have the most commercials.
out of curiousity, which ones are still open? I think the one on Fuqua which is on the other side of Gulf Pointe 30 closed down, cause I passed by there last week and it said they had "Taxi" which came out almost 2 years ago. The only one I know thats open, is the one in Sharpstown, in which I believe is also $1.75 and $1.50 for matinee. Im still waiting for the day for one of the older stadium seating theaters become a dollar theater. First one to do it in my opionin, is Cinemark Hollywood in Pasadena, or AMC Meyer Park cause those places are just old....
WindChimes on Westheimer and Synott is about the only one know in my area I think they make money on concessions and Ads They seem to get some decent population [not major but decent] Rocket River haven't been in a while they generally get movies between their run and DVD release [maybe even HBO release] I saw that MI3 there there. . and it was at AMC still as well
Yeah I work at a theater and these places dont make jack off of the box office. However, a dollar theater probably makes a higher percentage of money off of their ticket sales than a first run theater does. All the money comes from concessions. There are even a few movies that come out where the theater makes NO money off of ticket sales for the first few weeks. RE: how do they pay employees? They pay them as little as possible, that's how. After 3.5 years working part time at a movie theater--I made 6.01 an hour. Assistant managers started at 7.25/hr.
yeah no kidding. last time i went probably 3 years ago, me and my friend saw two rats running across by the bottom of the screen.
I went to the one off I-45 and Nasa Road I, it's been there forever it's right next to Cinemark. They had some movies that aren't terribly old, MI3, RV, Stick It, Scary Movie 4, Just My Luck, The Shaggy Dog, Ice Age 2, Akeelah And The Bee.
Yes, it's been closed for a while. The last movie I saw there was Spider-Man 2. It had previously closed down for a year or two before being reopened, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it back in operation eventually. Heck, they're almost there. That Cinemark you mention only charges $3.50 for tickets.
