Link: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-magic-rivers&prov=ap&type=lgns Rivers fired as Magic coach By DOUG ALDEN, AP Sports Writer November 18, 2003 SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Doc Rivers was fired as coach of the Orlando Magic late Monday night after the team got off to the worst start in its 15-year history. Rivers told The Associated Press early Tuesday that Magic general manager John Gabriel told him of the decision in a meeting at the team hotel after Orlando lost to Utah 90-88 on Monday night. The Magic, an NBA-worst 1-10 this season, have lost 10 consecutive games. ``It is part of sports,'' Rivers said. ``I thought I had a good run here. Things just didn't work out in the end. Maybe the players need to hear another a voice.''
I believe it was the next season. Doc's learned that between coach and star, coach almost always loses. (I wish Doc had his job and TMac had been traded -- here.)
IIRC, Doc was doing the color commentary on the Spurs games before he went into coaching. He singlehandedly made Joel Meyers tolerable. You got to believe he'll be back on his feet soon...somewhere. The inaugural season was 1989-1990. No wonder not many on us rememebr...here's the roster from their first season...18 W's & 64 L's... Terry Catledge Reggie Theus Otis Smith Jerry Reynolds Nick Anderson Sam Vincent Sidney Green Michael Ansley Scott Skiles Morlon Wiley Jeff Turner Mark Acres Dave Corzine
I think McGrady wanted him fired...after watching one game in which McGrady laughed all the way through a highly embarrassing performance.
i see Doc going to the Toranto to coach Vince C. he did good w/ one superstart i think he could do the sam with the other. Even though he went down hill at the end but thats only becuase T-Mac wanted him gone, IMO
sign doc to replace mooch? seriously, his team just can't win a game. It really wasn't his fault.. the expectation was just too high... everyone who expected howard to be a big plus had been disappointed.
I wonder where is that one poster that said the Magic are better than the Rockets, where has all to Magic fanboys gone???
i remember something this summer about the rockets being interested in doc rivers, but the magic didnt let him talk to us or he wasnt interested cuz he wanted to stay with orlando. interesting.
From ESPN.com: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/columns/story?columnist=aldridge_david&id=1665111 Fired Orlando Magic head coach Doc Rivers asked team management on Monday to either fire him or leave him alone. "If you're going to judge me on 10 games after all that I have done for four years, getting the team to the playoffs and overachieving, (bleep) or get off the pot," Rivers told ESPN on Tuesday morning. Too funny.
good for rivers. it really is only ten games AND in the leastern conference. things aren't as bad as they seem for them... there's plenty of season left for them to catch up.
