http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_Salary_Cap How will this clause affect the rockets, if mcgrady does not play next season? if he doesn't play next year, even though the injury did not occur in the offseason, will we get to use 50% of his salary to sign someone(s) next season? heard matt jackson talking about this a few minutes ago..
we know mcgrady is gonna rehab and knowing him, he'll take forever. we can just sit his ass all year long and not give him a chance to try to play with someone else, in case the darius miles scenario is similar.
Why didn't we get this last year when Yao went down? Or were we just screwed because it happened after the trade deadline and no one worth a $%^& was available.
My scenario is more along the lines that T-Mac never plays again, retires and the Rockets get half of his slot. T-Mac rehabs as hard as I try to stay in good shape. If he has micro-fracture surgery, I don't think we'll ever see him in a meaningful game again. (Certainly not in a Rockets uniform)
McGrady's salary would still count towards the cap so they would still be limited by how much of that exception they can spend which would be around $6-7 million. The also need to fill the roster with three more players to achieve a 13 man roster minimum. In other words the Rockets are looking at a MLE level guy if they try to use the exception to its fullest.
matt jackson just said that the average salary limit does not apply if he is forced to retire. i don't think tmac will retire, but i hope he does...
I wish he would just hang it up and spare himself the embarassment. He looked defeated this season. Another surgery is going to bury the guy.
As already mentioned, it's for the league average salary. It's also worth noting that it requires league approval -- and the general sense on this is its a bit tougher to get this after the league granted it and was wrong several times earlier (once with Mo Taylor, in fact). Given how players like Amare and others have returned from this surgery in less than a year, I highly doubt the league doctors will agree that TMac will not be able to recover with 13-14 months. Even if we were to get it, I wouldn't even be sure we'd use it (or use it in addition to the MLE) due to luxury tax constraints and cap positioning in 2010.
as much as i wish he would retire, i think the more likely scenario is that he tries to get one more contract out of his declining body, playing the "facilitator" role that we've come to expect of him recently. in all likelihood this would be as a smaller cog on a good team so they can carry him past the first round and he wont have to live on with the stigma. i think he's too proud to go out like this. the enduring memory of tmac would be him getting hung on a fast break dunk.
It's 50% of his salary or the MLE whichever is less. In this case it's the MLE. We are not going to use it this season, because that would put us over the salary cap
