Is that where satellite beams reach?

I think so. It is based on data collected from internet users so it may not be 100% correct.

BTW, it may not be Dallas channels that Houston doesn't get. It could be Austin.

Soooo I am switching from Comcast to Dish or DirecTV.

Dish came out with some really good promotions effective August 1st and it looks like DirecTV will match 'em by phone. Here is the deal. I have been with cable forever, and have NO idea how satellite TV works. Is there a separate receiver for each cable box?

I ask because while I will need the service in my residence here in Houston for my family, I go to school in Austin... in an apartment that has Time Warner Cable. I was reading Space Ghost and rockbox's posts about these 'beams' etc... Any way I could get an extra receiver on my account and connect it up in Austin to watch Rockets games on Fox Sports Houston? (How much $$)?

Most likely yes. I've never tried a houston receiver in Austin, but my brother has my Austin receiver in Dallas at it works great. I think they charge me 5 bucks a month for service per extra receiver. The best thing about Directv is that they only charge you 10 a month for DVR regardless of how many you have in the house. I have 3 and each can record 2 channels at once.

The biggest thing to worry about with an apartment is you need to have direct line of sight to the south from your balcony or where every you plan to mount your dish. Most apartments won't let you mount it on the roof. There is at least two cable that come into the apartment and you would have run those cables yourself or pay someone to do it for you. You can not use the existing cables run for time warner.

For what you want to do, i recommend DirecTV. Dish usually sets up one receiver for two rooms, with a max of two receivers. (four rooms total). Also, you must have your receivers hooked up to landlines with Dish or they will charge you $10.00 an extra a month. DirecTV has a receiver for each TV and its an extra $5 a month per receiver. DirecTV has a limitation for receivers, but its well past double digits. After the first four, they charge you extra for the installation.

As far as the spotbeams, if you are going to austin, then yes, it appears you will be ok.... but I don't guarantee that. It looks close.

If you know someone who has DirecTV in austin (Rockbox?), have them check their signal strength for transponder 28 on the "101" section. If its fairly high, then you will get it.

Eh just realized I was putting something impossible into motion. My apartment is on the third floor.... without a balcony.... without a window that opens. Plan doomed. How on earth am I going to watch Rockets and Texans games?? Time Warner Austin has a weird obsession with the Titans (even though VY was benched). I guess this means another year of broadband NBA league pass. Thanks anyways Space Ghost / rockbox

There's a chance that the Boxee team will write an addin for NBA broadband. They did it for MLB.

Depends on how bad you want it. As I recommended earlier, grab a slingbox. Or as some of the more desperate cases i've heard about, if you have a line of site from the window, put a dish on the inside. If you can find a way to get a cable inside, you can do it.

Well thing is I have this Sony Locationfree Base Station (Supposed to be similar to a slingbox) and I got it on the cheap a year ago- Just never got around to setting it up. I shall give it a try?
