pulling a Ronald (Donald) Miller scam (yes, from the sappy "Can't Buy Me Love" movie). Their offering new HD channels but most customers have to upgrade their receiver and dish to get them. And, of course, their not doing this for free. So, I have a perfectly fine HD TIVO DVR receiver I shelled out over $600 for not more than 2 years ago...not including installation fees (which start off under the guise of being "free" but quickly incur additional costs for any real work). I currently get the DirecTV HD channels 70-80 and local HD with antenna. It's pretty much been like this for a while per their offerings. But, now, if I want to get their many new satellite HD channels...they want me to shell out $300 to "lease" a new receiver that is the equivalent to the HD TIVO DVR I already shelled out big bucks for. I think they also don't have TIVO so I get an inferior DVR service. To top that off, their contract with TIVO is set to expire in one or two years so I lose that on my existing HD DVR when they decide not to renew it. My question is...why should I have to pay for any equipment at all? Didn't I already do that 2 years ago and now I'm falling onto the hurried road of becoming obsolete? I'm paying $300 to "lease" a new receiver. Therefore, I don't even get to "own" the receiver and have to give it back if I decide to leave. WTF am I paying $300 for then? I'm already paying for the HD channels and Tivo service as it is. Whatever. It feels like a Donald Miller scam. As a customer, I'm a little perturbed by it all. Here I was expecting to get new HD channels on my existing equipment as they became available. Silly me.
what does that have to do with a $2,000 telescope? maybe i need to watch the movie again, it's been a while.
I'm upset that I have to get satelite if I want to watch the Rockets in Austin. Besides watching them on my laptop, any Austinites have a better alternative? Shame on you Time Warner and your lack of basketball package...
Just when I thought you satellite guys had convinced me to drop Comcast you go and post a thread like this.
Ditto, I was talking to my roomates about it the other day. We only have like 10 hd channels. If even that many with SuddenLink cable.
Alas, I called last week and the sales rep told me they have nba tv but thats it. Even if I have to dish out some dough for satelite and league pass, I'll probably still be saving money considering I had to go out to eat/drink every time I wanted to watch a Rockets game last season. $20/meal x probably thirty-something games = satelite looking much better in comparison.
Your old box can't get the new HD mpeg4 channels. It costs a lot of money to launch new satellites for new HD channels. Your $300 is paying for that.
Still trying to find out if they offer their service in Kingwood. I hear U-verse has the PBS station that carries the African anteater ritual show. I gotta work on my dance moves.
Surf, I knew this was coming. They switched to MPEG4 compression, that means you have to get a new box.
Or just switch over to Dish - they LOVE stealing people away from those crooks at DirecTV. Lots of HD channels too, and more all the time, it seems. When I jumped from DirecTV to Dish, I actually called and had the new install completely done before I called DirecTV to cancel my old service. I had given them several chances to keep my business by offering me a good package price, but they refused. So, when I called to cancel, THAT was when they started begging and pleading and offering all these great deals. I told em 'No thanks, you had your chance, you're history now!' That was a good day, because I really really REALLY hate those sorry SOB's.
I've been with Direct TV since 2000 and have had nothing but good things to say about them, so I'm always surprised when I see people complaining about bad service. I guess the ****storm is coming, soon enough, for me.
when you can, if you can, go uverse. I switched about a month ago and have been very happy. Plus I save over 50 bucks a month and get more movie channels. the big detraction is that they only allow one dvr and it's not a whole home dvr (yet. they are slowly working on getting it to be). there are also some glitches that are to be expected with a new provider, but overall it's sweet.
