I see people carrying around these nice small camera that have big LCDs on the back. Upon closer inspection they're what's called Sony T7s... I would like to buy one. Any owner that can offer some pros/cons/alternatives, and what's a good price? Lowest price I should expect before pulling the trigger?
canon's are pretty nice. good quality and not overly expensive, unlike sony. also depends on what you're going to be doing with your camera. If you are going to be Christopher Doyle on the weekends, u might want to check out nikon or olympus as well. good deal going for about 250 on Dell.com for a s450 canon i believe.
That's a big question. But first you need to tell us: 1) What's your intended budget? 2) Are you looking for a pure point-and-shoot type or a camera with decent manual controls?
I don't even know who Christopher Doyle is... I think I'm just going to take pics when I go on trips...
Well I looked on Bestbuy at the T7 is $350... I'm comfortable with that, I just wonder if it ever goes lower, I haven't done a lot of market research. I'm not sure about the second question... I think I just want to take pictures for fun... so I don't need professional features or anything. But 5.1 MegaPix sounds like it's pretty good already.
Now knowing your budget and intention with the camera, I'll spare you much of the details from the homework I've done. First, don't buy Sony DSC-T7. It doesn't have good reviews from people who buy it. Second, as other posters have suggested, get a Canon Powershot. For $350, if you have some patience and are comfortable with online shopping, buy a Canon Powershot A620 (7 MP). Last I checked, the lowest price is around $260 plus shipping cost. Also included in you budget should be a memory card with good size and speed (1GB or better), a carry case, and NiMH AA batteries (2300+ mAh) along with charger. For a little less, $205, you can get Canon Powershot A610 (5 MP with similar features). Go to www.dpreview.com for more detail on digital cameras.
Do you know what the knocks on the T7 are? I like it because it's small... I think I would carry around / use a bulkier one less. I will look at the powershot...
there are plenty of cannons and nikons that are slim and sexy like the t7... get one with lots of optical zoom, and a good lens, such as the carl zeis, and ofcourse, ofcourse, always look for lithium ion batteries oh ya, and id go with a cannon simply because if i remember correctly it takes sd cards, which are cheaper and easier to find than the memory stick variations that sony's use.
See users' comments on T7: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinions.asp?prodkey=sony_dsct7 If you really like small camera, you can look into Canon Powershot SD series, for example, SD400 (also a 5 MP). The reasons I prefer Powershot A610/A620 over the smaller SD versions are A6x0s 1) have swivel-out LCD screens which can be very useful in some shooting situations; 2) use AA NiMH batteries instead of the proprietary Li ion batteries. In case you run out of battery, you can buy regular AA anywhere; 3) have plenty manual controls. The general rule I hear from most people is to buy a digital camera from a company that actually makes cameras, like Nikon and Canon, not just a generic electronics company like Sony...
Kodak is making a comeback in the digital front. They usually get 4 stars and some can be a 100 bucks cheaper than the competition. A general rule is not to get a compact digital cam for large indoor shots. Party pics are fine (less than 10ft), but if you're at a convention room or a bball game, your exposures are going to be gritty and dark.
I just got a Canon PowerShot 520. It was less than $200, takes excellent pictures and even takes (lower) quality videos. I'm very happy with it.

Don't buy a konica minolta. - I guess you might get one cheap now. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20060119/ts_afp/japanphotocompanykonicaminolta
I'm a long time Nikon owner. Some people don't like the way the menus are. I love it. You can't go wrong with Nikon, but there are other choices.
Okay so I'm down to either http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0487401 or http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0464278 Casio pros: 7.2 MP SD card (I already have one so I won't have to pay extra) Casio cons: Bigger Not an established brand Sony pros: Carl Zeiss lens Sleek design Sony cons: 5.0 MP (Which is not really a con because that's all I'd need) I would need to buy a Memory Stic card What do you guys think?
Ugh. Don't buy from Dell. I'm currently in the middle of a long battle with them over a non-recieved rebate offer. Not to mention everything I've ever bought from them has fallen apart within 10 months.
i have a sony cybershot and i love it - no regrets whatsoever. i dont know who carl zeiss is, but he makes a hell of a lens.
