I know he is a shooting guard that is only 6'5 but do you think the Rockets should take a chance on him? I know we are filled with gaurds but this guy can score and has great ball handling skills. He just turned 19 and you think maybe he will grow a couple inches? I think this guy will be a steal in the draft because he has alot of talent. He reminds me of Kobe Bryant.

You think we can do a deal like this, trade Kenny Thomas and Bryce Drew plus the 38th pick to Orlando for the 10th pick? Then we can draft Moiso and Stevenson.

    Cato
    Moiso
Stevenson - Rudy will tell him to grow a Fro so he can become a couple inches taller. [IMG]

Orlando wouldn't do it. They'd be taking on cap space.

YES,YES,YES! We aren't going to the finals next year, so let's roll the die on a guy who could be HUGE!

Remember, Kobe was the 13th pick by the Hornets when he came out. Only KG came out of high school in the first half-dozen picks or so.

Why does everybody want this guy, is it because hes a highschooler? Most players that come out of highschool won't make it and won't be a superstar. For every Kobe there is ATLEAST 3 high schoolers that won't even make it.

i havent seen alot of the guy, but at the mcdonald's all star game, he was the most impressive player besides randolph and miles. That includes rice and wallace and neal fingleton.

i would invest a mid 1st on him, he is an unbelievable athlete. very quick, 43 inch vert.

Yes, there have been problems IN THE PAST with the NBA evaluating high-schoolers because in the past they never spent a minute on it. Now they do and their record of evaluation has much-improved. There will always be failures....

Uhh...what about Jonathan Bender last year? He was #5 overall.

    Rocketsiv--

This is not to slam you, but....

I am SICK of people saying....."for every 1 highschooler that makes it there are 3 that fail" that is simply not true.

    Kemp....star
    KG......star
    Kobe....star
Lewis...on his way to be a star
    J. O'neal....good player...doesn't get the PT because of that deep deep team..but is very good (see how many people wanted him in free agency, and those still wanting to trade for him)

Harrington....looked like another soon to be star before his injury...and probably still will be

Bender....Again no PT, and an injury...but, Bird has already said that Harrington and Bender might turn out to be the NBA's next great duo!!

Leon Smith----head case (dallas picked him)
    C. Young------failed (so far)
I am sure I am leaving a couple out but you know what......that sure doesn't look like a 1/3 ratio to me.....

It may be true that it takes a little more time for them to become good players...but if you ask me....the chance is worth it to get a Kobe, KG or someone like that at a mid-first round price!

And I won't even go into the unpredictability of the draft even for college players....see Harold Minor!!!!

The draft is NOT a science

You forgot Tracy McGrady, Darryl Dawkins and Moses Malone.....all good or even great players that came straight from high school.

...And don't forget that these guys still make at least league minimum of a couple hundred thousand a year (maybe half mil by now I dont know). That is still a whole boat load of money and there is no telling that they would make it at all out of college. For some people college os smarter, but not always. Heck, what Jermaine O'neal did seems smart to me. HE would just now be graduating college (I think) and would maybe get more PT next year. But if he could finally get on a team that would play him, he would get the PT regardless and got money in the bank the last 4 years and a phat lucrative contract already. Id take it.

DeShawn Stevenson is no Kobe Bryant. And he's not going to be better than Vince Carter. He has a very weak jump shot. Vince had a better shot coming out of high school. Ball handling skills are below average. He doesn't even come close to matching Kobe in the outside shooting and ball handling criteria. For all this talk about his athleticism, he doesn't exactly wow me. He's not close to Vince Carter in terms of just sheer unbelievability. If any of you saw the kind of things Vince Carter did in the high school slam dunk contest, you would understand what I'm talking about. Carter could do things pros couldn't do. Bryant was a couple of wow factors lower than Vince, but he did some jaw dropping stuff back then. DeShawn doesn't exactly bring me out of my seat.

And I don't believe he's going to be 6'5" when he is measured. Trying to making the transition to the pros as a guard is unbelievably hard. Kobe is a rare and only exception to that rule. But Kobe himself is a rare individual. We're talking about an individual who was probably more mature and articulate than everyone in the 1996 draft. The guy's dad was also an NBA player. He scored over 1100 on his SAT's. He knows more than 2 languages. He was a loner type to begin with. Kobe mental makeup was designed to make the leap to the pros.

DeShawn on the other hand has a family that is not supportive of his decision. He's got a game that is lacking in too many areas. And just look how many times he went back and forth with his decision to go pro. Kobe always knew he was going to turn pro period. That was how supremely confident he was. I'm not sure if Stevenson has that kind of confidence.

But don't get me wrong, he's got potential. And there's always someone out there who's willing to gamble on it. But I wouldn't do it.
