Free agent Derek Anderson was at the Van Exel charity softball tournament in Houston on Saturday. He mentioned Denver, Houston and San Antonio as teams he's shopping himself around to.

But does that mean Houston is interested in him? How would this guy fit in? He obviously has some skills.

He has skills but why would we want another SG? I wouldn't think we'd be interested.

Derek Anderson has some skills but his number one problem is that he is very injury prone. In his 3 seasons in the NBA, he has not played more than 66 games in one season.

Here are his stats from NBA.com.

YEAR TEAM G GS MPG FG% 3P% FT% OFF DFF TOT APG SPG BPG TO PF PPG
    97-98 Cle 66 13 27.9 .408 .202 .873 0.8 2.0 2.8 3.4 1.30 0.20 1.9 2.1 11.7
    98-99 Cle 38 13 25.7 .398 .304 .836 0.5 2.3 2.9 3.8 1.26 0.11 2.2 1.9 10.8
    99-00 Lac 64 58 34.4 .438 .309 .877 1.3 2.8 4.0 3.4 1.41 0.17 2.6 2.3 16.9
    Career 168 84 29.9 .421 .281 .867 0.9 2.4 3.3 3.5 1.33 0.17 2.2 2.1 13.4
    Playoff 4 0 25.8 .455 -- . 885 0.0 2.3 2.3 2.8 1.25 0.25 3.0 2.5 10.8

He is a good ballhandler and sometimes played point guard for the Cavs. He also has some nice athleticism, and he is a great FT shooter. Not much of a 3-point threat though. I still remember in Kentucky's 2nd championship game during their recent 2-year reign, Derek had to sit out the Tourney because of a torn ACL I think, but they put him in to shoot 2 technical free throws. Kentucky fans considered him better than Ron Mercer although Mercer was the star that year. He's also one of the nicest guys in the NBA I have heard. Excellent Rocket material, if not for the injuries.

If we draft Moiso, get rid of Walt, and sign Derek Anderson, he could split time with Cat and Shandon at the 2 and 3.

Wouldn't it be best just to sign Mobley. Cuttino has much more potential then Derek and we are full up at that spot. He must be high on somethin if he thinks he'll be here next season.

Dice. maybe it is you who should OPEN YOUR EYES. The Cat was runner-up to the 6th man last year and would start for most of the teams in the NBA. He has all-star written all over him(not superstar). Derek Anderson had nobody at all on a Clipp team who was horrible. Cat can play 3 positions and can lightup the scoreboard. I am not saying he is the greatest but he is younger and more athletic than Derek and has a greater upside.

If Derek Anderson would accept a spot off the bench, maybe as sixth man, I would definitely take him. Cuttino can start at SG while Shandon starts at SF.

As far as potential goes, I feel Anderson has more potential than Mobley. Anderson can dunk on people and he is fearless driving to the hoop. Mobley is more refined, has a better shot, and is less streaky, but he just doesn't have the athleticism that Derek Anderson has. Plus, I feel Anderson is just as quick as Mobley. Mobley's first step is not as quick as he claims.

Mobley can be an All-Star in this league. He has a dominating first step, a great jump shot, a nice crossover, etc. He averaged the same points as Anderson, and Anderson started on a terrible Clippers team. Mobley is younger and has much more potential than Anderson. We aren't overestimating him at all. Like Dean said, Cat is superior to DA. I've watched both of them play in games, head to head, etc. and I've always thought Cat was the better player.

By the way, Mobley's first step is at least as quick as he claims, if not more. It is dominating. I'd take him over Anderson anyday.

I am a Mobley fan and I watched Anderson play his 1st couple of years here at Ohio State then his last year at Kentucky and yeah if (and that is a big if) Anderson can stay healthy he has more of an upside than Mobley. Anderson is the real deal.

But Anderson is injury prone, and for that reason only I would rather have Cat. Anderson has more potential but he has shown that he is very, very injury prone.

I like DA but we don't need him to upsetr team chemistry.

Actually Mobely does play three positions. He played a season as the PG and played a little of it last year when there were injuries. He is obviously a shooting guard. Also the last 1/3 or 1/4 of the season Rudy played a line-up with Moochie at the point, Steve at the two guard, Mobely playing small forward, Walt at the 4 position, and Cato playing center when healthy.
As far as who has more potential it is hard to say. I'd probably go with Mobely and I will admit I am a tad bit biased. Anyhow, Mobely is farther along at this point in his career than Anderson was. Derek Anderson is probably the better assist man but only because Cuttino tries to get to fancy with the ball. Injuries play a role. Derek Anderson is extremely injury prone. Going back all the way to his college days you will find he tore his ACL 2 times back then. Cuttino has not suffered a major injury to my recollection. The one thing that seperates the players is that Cuttino has the ability to penetrate to the basket and score anytime he really applies himself. Cuttino is a finisher, even in the clutch. That is something that is rare in the NBA these days. Believe me though I am not overly biased as I have followed Anderson since his college days and he was one of my players at UK.
