Here is the starting Line Up I would like to see on opening day -

    1- Alston
    2 - McGrady
    3 - Artest
    4- Scola
    5 - Ming

Landry, Battier, Hayes, and Dorsey make for an awesome front court rotation with the three starters. Scola and Dorsey can play the 5 or 4. If we are able to sign Deke, it is gravy on top.

Barry, Brooks and Strawberry are the primary back court subs, Head might get to the point where he is a significant player.

Mike Harris able to play anywhere except the 1.

Does anyone in the league have the depth we do?

The other NBA team with this much depth last year - Boston.

Phoenix has nice depth too. Several players who can play 2 or more positions.

    Nash
    Barbosa
    Bell
    Barnes
    Hill
    Diaw
    Stoudemire
    Lopez
    O'Neal

Houston always appears to be one of the deepest teams in the league in September, and it always turns out to not be the case. Let's let their play answer the questions this year.

I'd like to disagree with that. If we weren't so deep, we wouldn't be able to win 2/3rds of our games without Tmac or Yao. And considering how much our starting lineup gets **** on (namely Rafer Alston), we would have to have a deep bench to stay competitive with injuries.

really? Depth, or quality depth, has been an issue for a few years in my mind. You had some guys that could bring specialties, e.g. head for 3 pt shooting, but they have lacked multidimensional players.

The only thing we lack is a true 6th man. But you have plenty of teams out there that have the 1 sixth man and then a bunch of scrubs coming off the bench.

exactly. one dimensional players, or "specialists" don't create depth when they are in the rotation. a deep team has specialists at the end of the bench only to be used in specific situations.

i consider this years roster to have quality depth, as you called it, because this criteria is met.

I looked at your post and was like. Meh. Not really. Then I realized you didn't even mention Battier. I think we are 1 major contributor away from having legit elite level depth. It could be Francis but I doubt it. It could come via 2.4 of the MLE, but I doubt it. It probably won't come.

That's just wrong... Did you see Boston's full roster from last year?

Thats why i think Artest is best suited coming off the bench. Our starting 5 with Battier in instead of Artest is still up there with the best in the league. Then add Artest in off the bench with the green light to dominate the ball with the second unit and we have that scoring off the bench. Now you have Landry, Barry, Brooks, Head, Hayes and Dorsey behind Artest and that is one of the deepest benches in the league as well.

I don't think we are. We just don't have the Ginobli/Barbosa/Gordon type that other teams have. Look at teams like the Celtics, Suns, or Spurs. They have one great bench player but the rest are pretty mediocre. With Houston you have Battier, Landry, Barry are all very solid bench players, just no Ginobli/Barbosa/Gordon.

You are preaching to the choir here. This is exactly why I would like to see Artest start. You have these solid bench players that could easily be role players in the starting lineup (Hayes, Battier, Head, and Barry HAVE started a ton of games before), but you don't have that Ginobli/Barbosa/Gordon off the bench that will give you 20 a game.

Did Boston have a guy like that? They did win the championship right?

Posey is the guy that was the closest to that, really. Although Posey isn't anywhere close to Ginobli/Barbosa/Gordon. You don't NEED a guy like that to be a great team, but it would be nice is all. Thats why I'm not going to lose any sleep if Artest ends up starting over Battier.

If Francis ends up being that guy, that would kick ass.

The ONLY reasons Head ever started were extreme injuries and extreme lack of depth in our backcourt.
