I know this is opinion but judging by other reactions you couldn't be more wrong. From her brother talking about her waking him up in the morning to memorizing television show episodes. That was very genuine. anyone with siblings knows those are the things that make your relationships with your family

watching your father go to work everyday, following your big brother in his footsteps. barack's feeling as a first time father. you couldn't be more wrong.

    Victoria Osteen > Michelle Obama
    Joel Osteen > Barack Obama

Listening to Michelle Obama is like fingernails on a chalkboard. What a totally contrived, phony speech tonight. She's just not at her best unless she's sitting next to Farrakhan railing about the country that has gift-wrapped her entire existence for her...

tell me what politicial speech is not "contrived and phony." hell, tell me what politician isn't.

both conventions are HIGHLY planned and contrived and try to woo and sweet-talk to the nation.

you're naive if you think only michelle obama is it.

    too funny!

In a bid to party behind enemy lines, tonight the Republican National Committee is trying to woo Clinton delegates with a "Happy Hour for Hillary" reception.

The RNC announced it is picking up the tab the Paramount Cafe, a few blocks from the Democrats' convention center, so that "open-minded Democrats" may consider backing John McCain. Hillary Clinton, however, is having none of it.

"This party won't exactly make it onto the list of recommended events for Hillary Clinton's supporters," Mo Elleithee told The Nation on Monday afternoon. "Senator Clinton supports Senator Obama and is urging all of her supporters to do the same," he added.

    Details:

    RNC "Happy Hour For Hillary"

    8:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m. MDT

Well, at least now we see that when Barack Obama is elected, Michelle will replace Hillary Clinton as the GOP's "Most Hated Female." It's not the fact that both of them are women; it's that the old men in the GOP are scared of a strong woman, capable of asserting herself. They prefer the docile first lady who's only concern is literacy (a valid concern, but not very controversial; the Illiteracy Platform has been lagging for centuries).

I only wish that the few women considering voting for John McCain as a swipe at the Democratic Party could consistently read tripe like this from the Republican choir boys. They do not have their interests at hand and only playing them.

Just what the dems ordered? Some are saying Hurricane Gustav is heading towards New Orleans on the eve of the republican convention. That damn Al Gore can control the weather.

They should just all go for the free booze! I could handle that!

I thought it was a very moving speech and very well-done. The emphasis put on hard work no matter what your difficulties really sends a great message, IMO.

Since the happy hour is occuring at the same time Hillary is speaking, why would any Hillary supporters show up? That is, if they can get into the convention.

If the RNC is paying, the whole Dem convention should show up and order millions of dollars in drinks.

Quoted for notable humor. :) This really cracks me up. I like to picture Al in a Fantasia-like top-of-mountain, lightning-cracking scenario.

    "Get thee... to... New Orleans!"

By the way, guess this is for another thread, but isn't New Orleans a weird choice for the GOP? Are they going to show the Spike Lee movie about Katrina? :( Or maybe it just goes to underline the distance between McC and GWB. That would be bold, but smart.

Democratic Convention Ratings Fall From 2004

By Michele Greppi and Andrew Krukowski

The first night of the Democratic National Convention, featuring an address by Michelle Obama, drew fewer broadcast television viewers than the event four years ago, when former President Bill Clinton kicked things off.

ABC, CBS and NBC brought in 12.1 million viewers in the 10 p.m. hour, down one million from 2004, according to preliminary, fast-national data from Nielsen Media Research. NBC scored the largest audience.

It will be later in the day, when final broadcast and cable ratings come in, before it’s clear whether viewers opted to seek out the cable news networks offering blanket coverage, or whether it’s a sign of lower interest in the first night of the Democrats’ doings.

Only ABC News’s convention special gained over its entertainment lead-in, picking up 1.6 million viewers following “Samantha Who?” to average 3.78 million viewers for the hour anchored by Charles Gibson, George Stephanopoulos and Diane Sawyer.

ABC finished second in the head-to-head competition to NBC News’s hour anchored by Brian Williams, which averaged 4.85 million viewers, down 2.6 million from the lead-in supplied by “America’s Toughest Jobs.”

In third place was the CBS News Hour anchored by Katie Couric, Bob Schieffer and Jeff Greenfield, which averaged 3.52 million viewers, down 3 million viewers from “The New Adventures of Old Christine.”

In other programming, NBC rolled out the season premiere of “Deal or No Deal” (2.8/8), finishing behind a repeat of CBS's "Two and a Half Men," to place second in adults 18-49. NBC's launch of “America’s Toughest Jobs” scored a 2.6/7, winning the hour, but the program fell off 31% from its “Deal” lead-in in total viewers to 7.5 million.

NBC finished the night in first with a 2.3/6.

CBS took second with its repeats, and ended with a 1.8/5. Fox placed third with a 1.5/4, and ABC took fourth with a 0.8/2.

The CW was a close fifth with a 0.7/2.

    Interesting

I’d like to see the numbers after all the cable news shows are factored in.

I'm guessing people wanting to see if Hilary goes off script tonight should bring the numbers up.

I thought Michelle Obama did an excellent job. Very genuine and, like everyone else, I loved the kids. People should remember that she isn't a politician and this is kind of a huge deal, you know? I'd like to see any of the rest of us do as well. Maybe B-Bob, I guess, or Jeff could have the crowd going berserk, but isn't it a bit much to expect the wife of a politician to automatically have the ability to uncork a great speech in that setting? Within that context, she was terrific.

Ted was great. They kept calling him a "Lion of the Democratic Party." Ted had his last roar and it was a good one. Flaws and all, he is a Democrat down to his bones. I'll miss him, even if I didn't always agree with him.

My complaint? All the "empty space" they should have been using to let the country hear some of the great Democrats in the Party let the GOP have it, or spell out what we're going to do for the country, in an exciting fashion, or both. Hopefully, the rest of the convention will be more "red meat" for people like me.

    Impeach Bush.
