If you do good work, you can always get work doing commercials. You just need to have good business plans and be able to consistently get under people's budgets. I took every film class UH has to offer and worked on several local films and documentaries. I think you might discover it's not for you pretty quickly. You can't imagine how detail oriented it is. It takes hours to record 5 minutes worth of usable footage. The editing aspect of film is fun and slightly less annoying, but I would suggest volunteering as a PA on a local film before you commit yourself financially to studying the art.
I'm actually in Filmmaking, and I'll be shooting a short film later this summer. As of right now, I have no budget...I'd kill to have $5,000, or even just $1,000. Shoot, give me $500 bucks and you can be my Producer.
Dude, you change your mind too much. I predict that 6 months from now you'll be "called" to do something else. My advice is to go to a real college, take all the general core requirements and REALLY decide what you want to do. If you still want to study film a few years from now, then go ahead, but I'm guessing you'll have moved on to something different by then. Probably not.
This is it. There is this guy that directs music videos for famous people. Your U2s, Mariah Careys, Eminems, DMXs, Korns, Britney Spears, Muses, Mobys of the world. He's from Houston, and graduated from a local high school here in northwest Houston. He said he went to NYU for a year, and quit because that **** was whack. If you have the talent, you don't go to those places. "You go pro."

I remember TexCam had a Red One at one point...they updated their site, and I didn't see it listed anymore. If you want to go into producing it's best to start out on the career path of administrative assistant to executives at studios, production assistant --> Assistant Director, and that route. Film making is a great thing to do, but doesn't necessarily lead to producing unless you are very successful in it and can then write your own ticket. Writer's assistant --> writer would be good if you want to produce in Television. There is a great program here in LA through the Director's Guild that's very hard to get accepted to but will definitely place you on the right track should you make it. It's not actually for being a director but for being an AD which is a better career path with producing in mind. Producing is even more about who you know than other parts of the film industry. The problem is that studios are laying off people right now and not really hiring. film school on the other hand is great if you want to do that for a career. Are you thinking of relocating to LA?
He was lucky. Most people go to those places as much for the connections you make there as anything else. You can learn a lot there, but nothing is as important as making the connections. Places like NYU and UCLA film schools have professors with major connections. Make good impressions and they can help you meet the right people which is what it's all about. If you meet the right people in the first year then you can quit if you want, but film schools are great places to go and network as a way to work your way into the business.
Unless you have money you have to break into the movie business at the bottom. Start as a sound/lighting guy on p*rn and work your way up.
