Other than the bad defensive play at the end that cost the game, how did the "D" look tonight? I only caught the end of the game (literally...2.5 seconds were left on the clock!)

    Bob,

It wasn't the Rockets v. Mavs! From what I'm hearing we looked lost tonight on a number of plays.

In my opinion, the defense wasn't good and it wasn't terrible. They were getting out hustled, and I think a lot of people are confusing the two. Both teams looked like it was the first preseason game. The only constant the entire night was Najerra(? spelling). He did everything off of pure effort.
I enjoyed the game and just seeing the boys on the court again.

I only saw the second half of the game. OUr offense sucked. Defense was decent but rebounding was horrible. Enter Najera, he's why they won. Not Finley, Nash, Nowitzki or Laettner. The Mexican Born superstar, no not Santana, Eduardo Najera!!! Honestly we looked bad the whole game. Taylor looks out of shape. He needs to get the ball down low!!! 10-15 touches(only true post player). The offense from last season was not out there last night, at least from what I remember.

I didn't see the game so i have no opinion , but if Rudy wanted Langhi more than Najuera their must be something good about the kid

To me, they looked confused on their defensive assignments. Individually, they didn't look awful but, as a team, they looked like they weren't sure where they were supposed to be on defense. Double teams were inconsistent and slow to react. A couple of times I saw guys backing up on their men and looking around for help.

The Rockets defense is based on help like most other NBA teams. They don't have the individual defenders to take guys one on one. But, tonight, they looked like their defensive schemes were awkward and uncomfortable.

That is what the preseason is for. They said the defense was way behind the offense. They were right.

Tiburon, i don't know what you are talking about. Our rebounding wasn't that bad. The only thing that looked bad was when Najera outhustled us for a few boards. We actually outrebounded them the entire game, and they hit a much better percentage of their shots than we did.

Does anyone know what happened to Cato? I was at the game, and it looked like he got poked in the eye somewhere near the middle, and he left the game.

Individually, the defense as I saw was like this.

Steve's and Mobley's did not appear to have improved much despite Steve's insistence that it has. Cato was dissappointing for the short stint that he had. Collier just seemed really REALLY slow.

I was impressed with Maurice Taylor's defense, however. There was one play when he was completely faked out by Najera and got dunked on, but other than that, anytime he defended a man straight up, he looked good. Shandon's defense was spectacular, as was expected. There were a couple of instances when he was guarding Finley, and he just made Finley look really bad.

Hakeem seemed good in the half-court defense, but his transitional defense was aweful. He gets up the court so slowly, the offensive play is already developing by the time he gets into place.

Team defense was not very coherent, and the help to the weak side was slow. Of course, all of this must be taken with a grain of salt because this is the first preseason game, and they can't be expected to be working together perfectly yet. Also, Cato didn't really play all that long, so his time when he was in is not a good indication of what his ability is currently.

Man! This is the longest post I have ever made, I best wrap it up. In conclusion, I think that the Rox need some work on defense, but when they start working together, we will be an excellent defensive team.

Cato did get poked in the eye by Williams. It is not serious and he will be back Thursday. They kept him out as a precaution.

That move wasn't really Mo's fault. If you watch it closely, he backed up and looked as if defensive help was supposed to be there. It looked like a mixup in the team defense rather than a complete miscue by Taylor.

Olajuwon was struggling in the first half with his breathing but used an inhaler at the half that made him feel much better. He said he felt comfortable in the second half and he looked it on the floor.

He is slower but, again, much of that is on the team defense rather than individually.

Bob i saw the Rockets vs. Mavericks preseason game. how bout you? We did have good transitional defense, we stopped at least 5 or 6 fast breaks. and our regular set defense was okay.
