Hey, Am looking for a dedicated server and was wondering whether you guys know of good hosting deals? Am looking for anything entry level, nothing too pricey. Ideas? Recommendations? Any companies I should definitely stay away from?
Do you need dedicated or just a lot of space? If you just need a lot of space, I would really recommend http://www.vortechhosting.com/ . They do reseller accounts where you can have a ton of space on shared servers starting at around $30. Win and Unix. If you want an actual dedicated box, I'd go with Rackshack.net, the hosting arm of EV1.net. They start around $99 per month for a dedicated box.
I had a very dedicated server at the restaurant I was at Sunday evening. He kept giving us Astro score updates. He got a great tip.
wait - are you looking for webhosting? Or co-locating your own server at a location? if you just want a website, I haven't had a problem with westhost: www.westhost.com . Cheap, SQL databases etc, but it is entry level
For a dedicated server, you can't beat http://www.rackspace.com/index.php http://www.ev1servers.net/english/index.asp is supposed to be really good, but they have a bad rep in the linux community because they paid SCO's extorsion money. They were like one of three companies to do so . . .
Expand on this? I am looking into the option of a dedicated server as the company I'm working for needs one for their database. Plus they have quite a few other sites they want to host on that. Also, I have a few personal sites I would be allowed to put on there. I have heard some good things about rackshack as well... I remember someone here told me about hostrocket.com a few years ago. Worked back then but that was just for a small site with a tiny database running on it...
A few months ago, SCO was running around suing everyone in sight who even mentioned "linux", saying that SCO had IP that was being infringed upon. They never actually showed any proof, and instead just told everyone to pay them money to be "SCO IP Compliant" or risk being sued at some point. About 99% of the world laughed at them because their claims were so completely insubstantiated that they looked to be entirely fictitious. A few paranoid companies bought the story and paid to be "SCO IP Compliant". One of the largest was EV1 Servers. Immediately after that went public they got HAMMERED. The backlash was huge on their forums and in the linux media. They really got ripped to shreds for it. Later, they decided they made a mistake and admitted so, but the damage was done. Here's a good story on the backlash /. has the whole history As far as I know, they do a great job, but after the SCO fiasco, I wouldn't use them. http://servermatrix.com/ is supposed to be good too. You all don't want to host it in house?
What database is the company currently using? A LAMP shop? After finding an offer that sounds interesting..........use that Forum's Search feature to find feedback/comments about that company to get an idea about its reputation. Web Hosting Talk
Keep in mind that, if you need Win servers, you'll have to look for them. The vast majority of dedicated and co-located server options are Linux because they are cheaper. Unless your DB is gigantic, your traffice is massive and/or your sites require heavy security, I would personally recommend a reseller account. Shared hosting is much easier to maintain and usually a lot cheaper. You can get the same amount of space and bandwidth without having to manage the actual server. Dedicated hosting is great if you REALLY need it, but of all our clients, only a couple actually need it.
