Any suggestions about what to get, or what to stay away from? I'm looking to spend no more than $1500.
Check on the following sites every day or two. They post some great deals on laptops under 1k (Mostly from Dell): http://www.bensbargains.net/ http://techbargains.com/ Do not buy any laptops that have a slower than 1.5 GHz processor that's over 1 k. I've seen some great deals on Ben's Bargains' site.
I agree. They used to be the best, but every one that I've seen in the past year has been complete garbage.
Skip ALL consumer home laptops...pay more and get a CPQ business laptop...the leading laptop in the industry for the last 8 years.
Man, for $1,500 you can get a hell of a laptop from Compaq Works. Example: 4 mos. ago I got a P4, 30GB HD, 768 MB Ram, 15" screen, 10/100 NIC and CD-R. I paid $1,199 and that included a 2 year extended warranty. I would stay away from Sony laptops. I have had two different ones that have had all sorts of hardware problems that started within weeks of buying them. You have to send it out to Cali for service. At least Dell, HP and Compaq have local service centers, depending on if you are in Austin or Houston.
The problem is that CPQ Works went away with the HP merger. You can usually find the same deals at HPShopping.com though, just go the bargain link and you can search by CPQ or HP products.
Yea I noticed that too the last time I went to Fry's. I guess Fry's is killing their business. As for Laptops, I am REAL happy with my Toshiba Satellite Laptop. I got a bargain out of it for $450 w/taxes. But I got lucky on that cause of a few rebates from 2 stores during Christmas time. Still, they are some good Toshiba Laptops I see on sale sometimes for even less than $800.
They got closed down because CPQ can make more money selling all the stuff that they sold at that place by the pound to third party re-sellers. While it was a revenue generator, it was also CPQ's refurbishment warehouse...well, that's in California now, so if they are selling the stuff to a third party reseller and the refurbishment warehouse is now in California, they shut it down. It P.O.d a lot of employees who could get kick butt deals there with their discount.
I know what you mean. My brother is a network engineer with Compaq and the one time I had a problem with my Compaq laptop, I just gave it to him and he had it back to me in 1 day.
