"Deadliest Catch" stars quit Discovery show

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) – A trio of stars of Discovery's hit reality series "Deadliest Catch" have left the show.

Capts. Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand -- who were sued earlier this month by Discovery for allegedly not performing work on a planned spinoff special -- as well as Capt. Sig Hansen, said in a statement Tuesday that they were "unable" to continue on the series due to the litigation.

"We have been through a lot over the past year and unfortunately given the current situation with Discovery we are unable to continue participating in 'Deadliest Catch,'" the three crab fishermen said in a joint written statement. "It has been a fantastic ride, and we wish the best to all of the amazing and supportive 'Catch' fans we have met over the years."

A statement from Discovery was not forthcoming.

The network sued the Hillstrands for $3 million claiming they failed to show up to finish work on "Hillstranded," a planned "Catch" spinoff. The Hillstrands' lawyer Jeff Cohen then called the suit an attempt to "extort" his clients and said the lawsuit could force them to sell their boats and fire their crews. Hansen, also repped by Cohen, later weighed in, backing the Hillstrands, slamming Discovery and saying, "I want people to know the captains stand together, and me and my brothers support them 100 percent."

Hansen, captain of the Northwestern, has been a fixture on "Catch" since its first season premiered in 2005. The Hillstrands, captains of the Time Bandit, joined in Season 2. Filming on the seventh season of the Emmy-nominated series is scheduled to begin as crab season starts in October. But barring any reconciliation, it now appears the show will be down three captains (in addition to Capt. Phil Harris, who died earlier this year).

if they dont work something out, this show is done.

The Bandit guys and the Northwestern were the main boats....I dont know anyone that likes the Wizard guys and with no one to take up running Phil's boat...just who is left?

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

I've seen the show 2k. It's just a bunch of hard asses fishing. Sorry but If they aren't complaining about not meeting their quota then they are smoking and ragging on a new guy.

The episodes when The capt. was fighting cancer and eventually passed were sad though.

What does this even mean? The Captains/brothers are the ones getting sued for $3 million.

Not sure how well you actually paid attention if you did indeed watch it. :p

Phil died from complications from the stroke he suffered while on the boat. The technical cause of death was intracranial hemorrage. (excessive pressure in the brain)

Its been a long off-season and I havent been able to pick on you in chat...so I gotta make up for it when I can. ;)

    You're on fire today.

    good post.

And before Deadliest Catch fans start crying, I've seen about 15 episodes of this show over the years. It's the exact same ****ing episode over and over and over...

    on fire? lol.

As for the topic, I agree that I don't think the show can survive with the remaining captains. I guess it all depends on replacement captains, but losing those 2 ships (also Phil's) is a HUGE hole to fill.

They were the best, and most entertaining ships on the show.

They were talking about losing their ships because of the 3 million dollar lawsuit.

Money has ruined the relationship between the captains and Discovery.

    What does Oski mean?

The show will go on; no way one of the top rated cable shows just goes away like that. My guess is they reconcile. If not, they will find other "quirky" captains to follow around.

I kind of like that one guy that was new this year. Captain Bill? He was a real *******.

In my opinion, they can just find some other captains to focus on. Problem solved.

You said it was sad how money changes people, not that it has ruined their relationship. Discovery Channel is a big company, they already have lots of money. So logically you must mean the captains have somehow been corrupted by money.

When you say money "changes" somebody, it usually means that they are different in a negative way. How exactly is accurately pointing out that a $3 million lawsuit will bankrupt their operation in anyway have anything to do with them being "changed" by money?

Being on the show gets them extra money, yet they seem pretty willing to walk away from it all. Maybe it's just a bargaining chip, but I don't think they are dumb enough to think that the show won't try to go on without them.
