    Tension erupts on court

Conflict boils over between Darius Miles and Kevin Pritchard, and Ruben Patterson says he wants to be traded

The tension between Darius Miles and Kevin Pritchard broke out into the open Thursday night at the Rose Garden. And Ruben Patterson said he is done with the Trail Blazers for the rest of this season and has requested to be traded before next season.

Miles, apparently miffed at being replaced during a 102-90 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, didn't bother to return to the bench after being taken out with 4:03 left in the first half. Instead, Miles threw his headband into the stands and ran directly to the tunnel and into the locker room.

Assistant coach Tim Grgurich chased after him, and Miles later returned to the bench. Miles said he needed to use the restroom.

Miles started the fourth quarter and scored on a fast-break layup with 8:34 remaining. But during the ensuing timeout, Miles again stood away from the team. Then Miles pulled himself out of the game, walked to the locker room again with 7:28 remaining and did not return. According to a Blazers spokesperson, Miles' sore neck was bothering him again.

"I hurt and came out of the game," Miles said.

Patterson, already upset about his playing time and the team's decision to give younger players more prominent roles, erupted in a postgame tirade and said he's not going to play in the team's final four games of the season.

"I don't want to get into details, but I think I'm gonna sit out these last four games. Because I went through so much for this team and it doesn't seem like these guys want to win here," Patterson said. "And I can't deal with that. I don't know if it's management or what, but it's obvious they want to play the young guys. I'm too good of a player for that. We are out there, trying to play hard and help this team win, and it seems like they don't care."

Miles, who played 11 minutes in the first half, didn't play at all in third quarter and played five minutes in the fourth quarter. In his 16 minutes, he made 2 of 8 shots and scored six points.

"He said his neck was sore," Pritchard, the Blazers' director of player personnel and interim coach, said. "I don't know for sure what was going on. He and I are going to have a little pow-wow and I'm going to find out."

Pritchard and Miles then walked into Pritchard's office, after which shouting was heard.

During the Blazers' first timeout of the third quarter, Miles sat on the bench, away from the team. He stood up but clearly was uninterested during the team's second timeout of the quarter.

Miles thought Pritchard had called his name to enter the game with 3:18 remaining in the third quarter. Miles walked toward the scorers table, but Pritchard said he called for Travis Outlaw to enter the game. Miles wheeled around and walked back to the bench.

Some of the Blazers players were apparently upset with Miles' actions throughout the game. Both Stoudamire and Patterson had animated conversations with Pritchard during the timeout after Miles walked off the court for the final time.

Miles has had his troubles with the Blazers this season. His well-publicized tirade toward former coach Maurice Cheeks in January resulted in a team-imposed two-game suspension. Miles was asked about his standing with the team after the game.

"You'll have to ask (general manager) John Nash and Kevin Pritchard that. I play for the Trail Blazers and I'm supposed to be here for another five years," Miles said. "It's not whether I want to be. But I have a contract for five years, so I'm supposed to be here. I might want to be here, but they might trade me somewhere else."

Patterson said he would welcome a trade, although Blazers President Steve Patterson, after speaking with the forward, said he will be on the flight for tonight's game at Golden State.

"If it's going to be like this, it's no use in me being here," Ruben Patterson said. "It's about winning with me right now. I don't want to be here. They just need to trade me."

    Notes:

Shareef Abdur-Rahim led the Blazers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. . . . Dallas forward Dirk Nowitzki sat out the game with a sore left shoulder. . . . Patterson has made eight of nine free throws since he missed eight of 10 against Sacramento last Friday. . . . Guard Derek Anderson was dressed and sitting on the bench, but he did not play for the 10th consecutive game. Anderson said his desire to avoid any recurring back pain reduced his chances to "slim" that he would play in any of the Blazers' final four games.

    what a freaking baby....

normally i dont like it when guys demand trades but i think patterson has the right idea trying to get the hell out of there. i wouldn't mind having him in houston. i think he has the best 2 point fg% among forwards in the league. on second thought he is a bit pricey and wouldnt fit in here.

What's really unfortunate is how good the fans to that team have been over the years. They don't deserve this endless amount of crap. Portland's a pretty fabulous city in general, and this is their only pro franchise. This has gone on now for what? A solid decade?

David Stern needs to call Paul Allen into his office for a chit-chat. He should go in right after Shinn. The Godfather needs to do his magic.

no its a franchise that wont clean itself up. when miles acted up earlier in the year they should have traded his punk ass but instead they fired the coach.

What a total embarrassment. Why the hell do they keep signing overrated problem children like Miles & Randolph to huge deals? That has been their problem for the last 6-7 years yet they keep doing it. How stupid can they be?

I would take Patterson on the Rockets, a fiery guy like that would make us MUCH better.

It seems like Portland has just been on a downhill spiral ever since that game 7 collapse in the conference finals against the Lakers in 2000 or whenever it was. They always seem to have talent, but they are disfunctional.

A guy demanding a trade, and all of a sudden, everyone on this board wants him, because of the fact that he demanded a trade???

Guys, someone demanding a trade doesn't mean it's a good fit for us. Patterson is no TMac.

I can't wait until Moochie starts to demand a trade. I am sure he'll become a hot commodity overnight.

What a great and grand franchise brought to its knees by Mr Whitsett, thru Mr Allen's allowing and allowance.

Stevie The Son has not had the effect expected from him when he was brought in.

As for Miles, sure take an expiring contract or two (pick from Vinny and Mooch and Spoon) and we'll take DM to raise.

Ugh, the NBA is becoming a mess of childish crying.

Miles has been a distraction ever since he went to Portland, he got into it w/ Cheeks (which is hard to believe) and then gets into it w/ the new coach. I'd suspend his ass for the rest of the season and make sure he knows he isn't a star, he's just a freak'n role player that can dunk, nothing more.

The Blazers just need to go on a fire sale and rebuild. Miles/Patterson/Randolph/Stoudemire have all had their problems and what do you know, they also have bad contracts.

I think Pritchard should hand over the coaching reins to ... Darius Miles and Ruben Patterson for the rest of the season.

Pritchard's status is assured, he's going to be the GM once Nash is shown the door this summer, why not let Darius and Ruben try to win with what they got? Tim Grgurich is the best assistant in the league as it is, so the Blazers should be able to hold serve.

Since he would be the backup for Tracy, what, precislely would Rapin Patterson give us for 6 million per through 2007, plus baggage, that Ryan Bowen does not, for the minmum, with no baggage?

Not a whole hell of a lot as far as I can see - which is why he has been radioactive on the trade market from about the time he signed his 6 year extension in 2001.

I'd take Eric Williams over Ruben... same type of player except Eric Williams is a JVG type of player.
